Question Strange piece on exhaust

This may be an off the wall question, please try to follow me. I will try to describe this piece that I have no idea what it is or what function it may provide..??!!
OK there is a 6 inch or so steel tube that is sealed on both ends that is welded to a flat piece of metal that is connected to a U clamp that is clamped around the exhaust located just before the muffler.
I noticed this today after i heard a strange clanking noise while driving, the steel tube was banging into the muffler and it is just hanging on to the exhaust pipe by the U Clamp. It looks as though it was held up in place at one point because I have never noticed it before. It looks like it would be a counter weight or some sort of stabilizer, but I honestly have no clue what this thing is..

Ill take pictures if i need to. I want to know what it is and if I can just remove it, I know a little bit about trucks but I have never seen a thing like this.

Any idea what this is or info would be much appreciated!
Thanks for reading my babble.

I believe that is a vibration and drone dampner.

You are correct about it being loose and rotating. Check out this old thread.

Yep, you kind of had to know what it was to find anything on it. I entered exhaust dampner and dampner.

Here's another.

Just make sure you have good welds and take it off. It's a weight reduction = more hp joking. I have taken mine off many moons ago. Makes no difference. Maybe a slight bit more vibration.

Fantastic!
Yeah I'm just going to take it off. If some day down the road I get any weird exhaust noises maybe I'll buy a new U clamp and put it back on, but from what I've read I don't think I will be needing it.

Thanks again , now I have a 30 second project to enjoy out in the beautiful weather we are finally having here in Michigan.

You should replace it with a standard clamp. If its in the same spot as mine, it is at a seam, which will need a clamp or it will leak and vibrate off.
Man, what state are you in. Your truck has cancer. Sad to see
Your frame looks good but your exhaust and driveline are taking a beating. Theres still time to save it!! Treat it, rust inhibitor and under coating. Remove and clean the drive line (good time to grease the splines and check U joints) and paint it a nice satin black or charcoal.

Im up in Michigan they salt the hell out of these roads here, so it really does take a toll on the cars and trucks. After lookin through these forums and seeing some of the trucks and reading how to protect the underside and after seeing that thing hanging there today , I'm definitly going give the underside of the truck a good inspection and get the bottom cleaned up, treated and greased.

And mine also is at the seam Toyz so I will get a clamp for that.

Thanks Toyz & BlueJay for all your help today, I look forward to hearing from you guys again, its been a pleasure.

It kind of looks like a part of an old set of duals, that came out the same side. So someone changed it, to reroute to the other side. So they just whacked the pipe off and left it there.
That would have been my guess
