What destroyed my gears?? (pics)

my spiders, the ring and pinion are fine.. All the bearing are good. I got into it to replace the axle seals and outer bearings and i found this. There wasnt any noise, vibes or anything. the axle gears are the same i just havent taken pics. heres some pics.



any input???

damn. too much heat, not enough gear oil would be my thought

with that much metal floating around in the rear end.. its just a matter of time before u wipe out the bearings and start having some reallll big problems..

well i have reason to believe that its been into before since theres a gasket in there with a buncha silicone the oil was changed and all cleaned out.. i dont know if the bearing were changed but i suspect it. some one definitely got in there and cleaned it up..... do spiders wear out???

spiders dont usually wear down, especially not with chunks missing like that. Something bad happened to that diff and was put back together half assed

The 8.8 differential does not like pushing a truck around. They Pinion and side gears eventually chip and the rear end gets destroyed.

interesting.... so there is a small chance this could be just wear and tear on my well used 210k mile 97 4x4 4.6 SCAB that has alot of heavy towing miles? i hope thats the case.. im really leaning towards 4.10's at the moment since i am in it already.. you think 4.10's with be nice for me as a commuter now, i have 285/75/16's with 3.55's now..

i made the switch to 4.10s.. worth every penny..

While the 8.8 should last for hundreds of thousands of miles, yours did, imho the 8.8 does not belong in the F-150. After abusing mine and destroying it three times, even with a girdle, it was replaced with a 9.75.

depends on your abuse.. mine in a stock truck works perfectly.. and i beat the hell outta my truck..
