Gear indicator cable replacement

Hello again,
My 1999 F-150 was formerly a company vehicle and shows some signs of neglect. The little plastic adjustment wheel for the gear position indicator has cracked from where it attaches to the steering post and appears the whole cable assy. needs to be replaced. The service CD I have is not very explicit on how to remove and install a cable. Some first hand guidance on this task would be most appreciated.

if just the adjuster wheel is broke then go to a local salvage yard and ask about a bad steering column to get one from

I made a simple repair using a small corner bracket from the hardware store.

The bracket has four holes, lopped off both ends so that only one hole is left on each side. Then bent it up at the corner of the bracket about 20 degrees.

Reamed the holes with a drill bit so the cable adjster will fit through.
Place truck gear in 2 (chock wheels so the truck does'nt roll) and unloop the cable, remove the broken piece that is just hanging there, then bolt the new piece on top of the remaining piece of the plastic adjuster.

I really need to do a how to on this with pictures when I get time

This repair cost $0.45 and about an hour of time and the adjuster will still work and will never break again.

Thanks for your reply,
Sounds like a good alternative. It appears the upper and lower steering colum covers need to be removed to get at the cable completely. When This is done I will have a better handle on any further questions. Do these cover come off without messing with the ignition switch? Any tips on facilitating their removal would be appreciated.
Thanks once again
