4.2 to 4.6

I dont know if there are any more threads out there regarding this topic but I searched and couldnt find anything. Anyways I have 2000 F150 2wd and the tranny slips a little bit into 3rd. We were just going to go ahead and throw in a new transmission but now we are kind of contemplating on throwing in a 4.6. I am curious as to how difficult it is to do this swap and what things I might need.

Part I know I need:

4.6 engine
new tranny
exhaust
4.6 wiring harness
4.6 computer
possibly 4.6 motor mounts

My uncle and his partner will be doing the swap if it falls through, since they are the mechanics.

Any help regarding this build will be appreciated

you're on the right track, also you'll need the accessories, radiator and stuff

if you can get a wrecked truck equipped with a 4.6 get the whole thing so you've got all you need

I'd try to find a donor with a 5.4L myself. Preferably one with a lightning engine. You'll be able to notice the power difference, the truck will then be much more fun to drive.

Yea, I'm with Jbrew. If you can't find a Lightning, at least get the 5.4. Why go through all that trouble to install the lesser of the two V8s?

I've got a 98 with a 4.2, and a 97 with a 4.6, and a 98 expy with a 5.4.
I wouldn't swap a 4.2 for a 4.6. The 4.2 is only about 20 hp less

The 5.4 would be worth the effort:santa:

4.2L to a 4.6L (non-PI) is about 9 rwhp/14rwtq difference
4.2L to 4.6L (PI heads) is about 15 rwhp/30 rwtq difference

4.2L to 5.4L =

go for the 5.4L

cool we are probably just going to go to the junk yard and find a truck with a 4.6 and get all the goodies.

I would love to have a 5.4 but my mom probably wouldnt exactly agree with that. My mom will be paying for it right now until i get a job this summer(15 years old) so a more expensive engine will likely make her change her mind about putting a v8 in there. Plus I plan on modding the 4.6 to get more power out of it so right now I just want a good base power plant. Im am hoping we can get this swap done before I go back to school so I can have a little more knowledge for when i take Auto mechanics class.

Well, just stick with a 4.2L then, - for now. If you go V8, 5.4L's would be about the same price as going with a 4.6L.

Find yourself an engine here, close to home -

The price of the engine wont be the problem. 5.4's aren't exactly the easiest engines on gas. The 4.6 gets the same gas mileage as the 4.2(according to the internet). Im a young kid so all I want to know is that I have an engine that can roast the tires from a stop. I dont want to have a lightning engine because I know for a fact that I will do something stupid. A 4.6 will get the job done for roasting the tires but it wont enough power to make me do something stupid like race on the street. Its a pride thing for me. No one wants to go around bragging about having a v6.

sorry to bug you guys again but do i have to get the 4.6 from another f150 to get motor mounts that will fit my truck? And what years are good years for the 4.6? I dont need anything notorious for having problems. Thank for the advice

Not sure where your getting your info from, -the 4six and 5four get relatively the same mileage, but your stuck on the 4six for some reason. You know more than us right

Anyway, - a F150 4six will have the right intake set up. You can get any, but you'll have to swap intakes if you pick one from a car, - which is where the 4six belongs IMO. That's all you'll have to do as far as bolting it in.

Good Luck.

hmmm I just looked into your statement a bit more and the 5.4's that are in the 2000 f150's get better mileage than ones from like 04. I know I do not have the knowledge of anyone on this site so I will not be the one to argue. Just going with a couple sites info. Maybe a 5.4 might be a better swap but ultimately a swap that wont be too hard and expensive will be better for me. Anything is better than this 4.2.

Yea, I wouldn't let gas mileage make the call and it's going to be the same effort and cost to go 5four as it would 4six, for you anyway.
