Pinion seal flange nut
Pinion seal flange nut
I had a leaky pinion seal and I know everyone says do not over tighten the flange nut, and guess what I did! but by only maybe an 1/8th of a turn my question is if I back it off just that much is everything screwed up??
So I drove to ford today and noticed a hum in the diff, which was the same sound on my toyota when I did not tighten the pinion nut enough. So hopefully that is true. I will be rechecking the inch-lbs on the pinion later, I also checked with Ford and according to them (they showed me the diagram) I do not have a crush sleeve my flange did not come with one. I got a new nut and will be redoing the torque hopefully that fixes the issue.
Well I hate to inform you that you do have a crush sleeve. I would never take my truck back to that dealer! The only proof I can come up with other than personal experience is this article...

"The 9.75 has had a few changes in its relatively short life, including larger axle bearings and shafts in '99 (from a 1.620-inch inner diameter to 1.705 inches), a larger outer pinion bearing (increased from 1.31 x 2.68 inches to 1.31 x 3.00 inches), and the pinion was altered for a longer crush sleeve."

Is the crush sleeve internal then?? The reason I ask was that the diagram he showed (the parts break down) showed a crush sleeve on the flange itself, however my axle 905A did not come with that part. Where would the sleeve be?? Just dont want to mess anything up!! And I have no choice on the dealer as it is the only one here!! lol
yes its on the back side of the pinon baring. From what I remember its the last thing on the pinon, so it would be right next to the flange but on the inside of the diff.

This is the diagram that he showed me, is 4859 the sleeve? as i put in that text box he informed me that it was not on mine just the flange was. Just want to ensure I understand you right so that I can go in there and cuss them out for not giving me the right info. Thanks red I really appreciate it.
Ok cool I will pull it off again and see what I get, Thanks again red yeah I looked all over for a 9.75 diagram too and no luck. The part #'s were the same thats why I chose that pic.
