2001 Ford F-150 XLT, Non-heated, Power mirror. Chrome housing. Driver's side.

My mirror is cracked down the center? On previous vehicles I have owned I had to replace the whole housing not just the glass. What's the easiest fix?

Local junkyard has a few computable. F-150s.

 

The glass on my drivers side is broke. i like it. adds character

I ordered an entire new mirror for my passenger side for about 30 bucks. So far its just as durable and as good of quality as the original. Ordered from usautoparts .net. Real easy to install. Just pull the door panel and its just 3 nuts

be real gentle putting the new glass in if you go that route. thats how i cracked my drivers side mirror

 

Mine cracked six months after I first got my truck and I just got a replacement that sticks on tops of the old one and that was a over 8 years ago and its still on there and no one can tell the difference

 

Any idea on the source of that cover?

I have an extra set of power mirror glass pieces laying around. i'll let both of them go for cheap. pm me if interested.
the glass can be replaced without replacing the whole housing.

 

I just went my auto glass guy I know and he told me he could order them, might try at a local shop. think it only cost 10 dollars at the most, its been a while since I did it

 

You can get new glass from Shuck's/O'rileys for about $8.

 

I've seen new glass on ebay for pretty cheap ... no idea if they're any good or not. You can also get used factory mirrors on ebay for approx $30 ea shipped. I would stay away from the Chinese aftermarket replacement mirrors ... the set I got were total trash (didn't fit very good and shook like mad when driving).

How do I go about removing the old and adding the new? What part of the actual housing pops off? Do I have to remove the whole housing?

just go to the junk yard with a screw driver, (may not even need that) and pop one out. make sure that it has two pins that have threads on them and two that are smoth, the expys and lincolns that i have seen are different so try to find a 150. then yours comes out the same way. then line up the pins of the new mirror, and squeeze the center. i thought i was gonna break mine when i did it, but i just had to pop it with my palm really hard and it popped in. (there is a little ball in the center where the mirror pivots) cost maybe 5 bucks and 20 minutes worth of work.

 

So basically the mirrors are held in with pressure? No screws or adhesives are holding the mirror in the back?

I assumed it was somehow glued and screwed and I would have to take the whole unit off the truck to replace the mirror somehow?

 

yep they just sort of snap in

 

There's a ball in the center of the plastic frame that holds the mirror which snaps into a socket in the mirror housing. I'm not sure how the mirror glass is attached to the plastic frame, probably glue of some sort.
