After much playing around, I managed to stop the leak. One of the lines had a small hole in it in the hard section just before the oil filter. I cut the hard line and then put on a piece of hose to join the two ends. Works great!

And in doing some looking and checking with the spare 4.6 I have from a Crown Vic, it would be very very difficult to put the filter back on the block, if it would fit at all.

Now to fix the transmission line leak...

BTW the 2 coolers in front of the A/C condenser are transmission (the larger one) and power steering.

If there is an engine oil cooler it's probably a water/oil cooler (uses engine coolant).

Check to see if there are any other hoses going to the adaptor at the engine besides the ones going out to the filter.

My 91 F250 had one like that. There was a spacer of sorts between the filter mount and the block. The lower rad hose went to the spacer, then another short hose went to the waterpump from the spacer.
I haven't taken a real good look at my 97 to see if there are any other hoses going to the adaptor......

Aha, power steering cooler! Interesting...

When looking at the adapter thingy on the block there's the hoses coming out for the oil filter and the lower rad hose. I have the piece from a car-use 4.6 that would allow me to mount an oil filter horizontally on the block, but it would be rather difficult to get in there to do it...

Actually, I have a Windsor 4.6L and the remote / oil cooler was definetly a factory item, was bundled with the 4x4 off road package.

I'm on my 3rd factory setup and have noticed a leak starting again in the lines near the filter - the factory lines suck horrendously on these units. If I can be without the vehicle for a bit I'll take the whole works off and get proper hydraulic fittings swaged on, not the cheap crimp crap that the factory setup comes with.

I know of folks who've had good luck with the Summit setup.

I replaced mine at 65k due to a leak at the filter side. Total cost was around $125 for new kevlar lined hose, and new threaded inserts. Dealer wanted almost $300 IIRC.

If yours is not driveable, then just pull yours off and see about getting it rehosed.
Let me start by saying my filter is on the block but I ran into this problem with my girlfriends Blazer. Chevy has the worst remote oil filter lines in the world. As soon as it gets cold the lines start to leak and they leak until they are changed. After changing them twice (and they are a total PITA to replace) I took the lines to a hose shop and had them replace the hoses with high pressure ones. The shop I went to were experts on this problem and built a set that was overkill in my opinion but when he told me they would outlast the car that was all I needed to hear. The price was the same as a new set of aftermarket lines. They have been on now for two winters and leak free. I wished I would have done this the first time. I don't know if the Ford ones are as bad but this is a good option.

I just checked out the Rockauto link further back in the thread, and the oil cooler hose listed for the 5.4 looks exactly like what is on my 4.6.

There is no listing on Rockauto for those lines on the 4.6....

I wish I'd seen that before I popped $250 at the dealer!
