Leaky senders are common. It's just plastic in the center, which can crack.

Ok, thanks for the help. One more quick question though. Do these things go out frequently? I had to overnight the new one in, so Im thinking that maybe I should keep one on hand if it might go again. Any thoughts?

I have a question, when you replaced the switch what did you use to make the seal? I have replaced mine and everything that i have used does not hold up, it last about a day and then it starts leaking. any help on the material that was used when replaced the switch.

as of last night my truck started doing the erratic sweeping of the gauge.. the gauge would jsut drop down and as soon as the light came on it would jump back up to normal.. it did it 3 times this morning.. truck still runs perfect with no knocks or anything.. im assuming its the sending unit just like what was described in this thread...

I would replace the sending unit. It takes minimal work to change, and is inexpensive.

@ mcolford...please message me a little more about replacing the switch. I have the same issue, at cold starts and especially below 50 degrees until it warms up. Not sure how worried I should be and this sounds like a much better idea than "shotgunning" expensive parts like a sending unit.

Thanks a TON!

Give me a little bit and I can snap a picture. On the 4.6L, it is on the drivers side, I accessed mine thru the wheel well. IDK about part numbers, I just went to the parts store, told them what I wanted, and they got it for me.

As far as it being common, like one of the guys said already, it has a plastic core, which gets heated and cooled a billion times, so yeah its gonna wear out in time. Im not trying to sounds like a smarta$$, just sayin its kinda common to happen.

NAPA part number: ECH OP6218

No problem. If you sit there and just look, by looking at your new one, you will be able to figure out where the one is on oyur truck. Thats all I did once I had an idea where it was.
