Black is the new chrome

UPS shows my blacked-out LED corners are out for delivery, they should be here within the hour. But this is what I'll be doing all night:

The headlights will have the lenses removed, and the surround painted gloss black. The taillights will be receiving between 2-3 coats of Niteshade, with the reverse LED being masked off.

I also ordered some new LEDs for my cluster since my el-cheapo Chinese ones I originally did the write-up with had burned out. The ones I ordered have a different head on them, so it should eliminate the hot-spots that occur with most LEDs.

I pre-heated my oven to 230*, and set the lights in there for 8 minutes. One at a time. The first one was easier to remove, the second I had to put back in for another 3 minutes.

320-grit wet sand:

1st coat of NS:

Then 1500-grit wet sand & 2nd coat:

Wow, I'm super pissed. My camera decided to go kaput on me. So from now on, you'll see weak cell phone pics. Right now both tails have their first thick coat of clear on and drying, and I have one headlight all colored and awating clear. Still havent started on the other one.

I'm probably not going to finish until tomorrow morning. I still need to get some RTV sealant for the headlights, and right now my truck has ZERO lights on it, so its not moving tonight.

Wow your headlights seperated really easy I'm surprised. People say its so hard to get them apart makes me feel way more comfortable doing this project. Where do you get the sealant? Is it special or just a walmart pick up? Did you use the krylon fusion on the heads? Can't wait to see your final product its gonna look good.

Seal up the heads and corners with black rtv silicone.

Also, even though the heads are aftermarket, they weren't hard to separate? i may be doing my corners soon then.

did you scuff the chrome any on the housings?

Thanks. Yeah just keep working around the edge and it takes about 2-3 minutes and they'll eventually seperate. I haven't got the sealant yet, I'll get it tomorrow when its light out. And yes, the paint is Krylon Fusion FOR PLASTIC

No, the heads were easy as pie.

And yes, I scuffed with the 1500 very lightly. I was thinking about shooting the heads with the VHT to make it look black chrome-ish, but I had already sprayed one headlight. I still wonder what that would look like!

So far I am EXTREMELY pleased with how it looks. And this is my first time tangling with VHT. I cannot wait to install them. But it looks BALLER. Just see for yourself:

I still have to apply the rubbing compound/polish, then some PlastX, and then they will be fully shined.

Whew. Time for a dinner break. I ordered Jimmy Johns.
