Main difference in the 97-98 to the 99+

What are the main differences in those two models? I hear something about a different motor, but what all is different.
Main reason I ask is b/c there is a 97-98 for sale that has the 5.4 and a 5 speed. Been thinking about going to check it out, but the difference worries me.

Off the top of my head...
Front end, Interior door panels, No PATS, No advanced computer, etc.

if im not mistaken the 97-98 are running a traditional coil and plug wires setup and 99 and newer are now coil packs on each plug. Im not sure what some of the other improvements were, but there was a lot of cosmetic changes, such as newer gauges with LCD odometer.

front cosmetics, header panel, interior package on 97, 3 vs 4 dr, gauges and pats, torsions, intake and heads, 4.6 went to cop ignition. fuel rails changed (regulator not changeable 99+)... mostly minor, but the PI intake/heads is the motor difference for the most part

Edit: 6/96 (roughly, i may be wrong) is the cut off date for the old style header panel.

Finding a 5.4 manual 5 speed is rare indeed. Care to share where? Any other details.

Zero came from the factory with a 5 speed 5.4L.

You need to look at the VIN and door jamb sticker to see what was swapped.

8th position of the VIN:
2 = 4.2L
6 or W = 4.6L
L = 5.4L

The door jamb has the Trans Code:
U or E = Auto
M = Manual
(There was never a Model Year where the VIN is 'L' and the Trans Code is 'M')

There is a member here (JMC) with a 5.4L/5 speed.
His conversion is in the tech articles forum.

Nearly all I have seen advertised are just dealer misprints where either the motor or trans was listed incorrectly.

Oil filter location, those were the best years for that, you'll like it.

The only worry. Like any vehicle, has it been takin care of ?

Are you sure on the header panel? In Raptor's swap thread, he indicates that the header panel is the same...

That's a relief. I want to swap to a HD/Lightning grille in my Expedition eventually and was worried I'd have to change the header! Build date 04/97
