front suspension knock

2000 f150. 4x4 122,000 miles. Truck make a knock or clunk sound when I go over bumps. Its comming from the front of the truck. I dont think its the tie rod ends, they were just replaced this summer and it wont make the sound just by turning the steering wheel. Seems to have something to do with up and down movement of the truck.

what else could this be? Dont know where to start.

Thanks

I had this same issue and thought it was my shocks...so i bought some Bilstein HD's...but it turns out what should look like this...

looked like this!

broken sway bar link...just sheared right through. I'd name that as a possible suspect. Ford is used to seeing this problem, I took the broken one to the parts counter and didn't even say a word. The guy there looked at it, said "one second" and went to the back and reappeared with a pair them and advised that once the first one goes, the second isn't far off.

Here's another thread:

Bingo! Thanks alot guys! It is the stabilizer bar link. Sweet! Thats a cheep fix. I would have never thought to look there but after taking a look its quite obvious that that is the problem.

when you put on your shocks did you notice if your shocks were too short while up in the air?

They were just a little short. i put the bottom in first with the bolt, then used a jack under the lower control arm to raise that up and guide the top into place. The toughest part is getting enough of the top post through with those bushings on to get the nut started on top. This is where the jack helps for compression. If you do the rear, don't cut the bands and let them expand out it's a huge PITA!! Put the bolt through the bottom first and just secure but loose so you can move the shock. Find the hole where the top goes, eye it up and then cut the band and let the shock extend to the hole. 100 times easier that way if you don't cut the band!

This doesnt seem right to me but mine are short as well. When i jacked up the front i noticed the bushings and washers began to pull through, my washer now flare upwards instead of cupping the bushing... I wonder what happens if i get a little longer shock???

This is why I love this Board. Had a terribly loud knock when I turned and feared CV or half shafts or worse. A simple search for knock AND turning brought this gem of a post and $24 and 90 minutes later no knock and it feels tight when cornering. Lots of thanks to Jeff for posting the pictures. I completely overlooked the broken mount for at least 15 minutes while spinning the hub looking at the boots, rocking the disc to see if it was ball joints etc, etc. I am a very happy camper now (literally). Thanks again!!

No problem! Glad it helped out, always nice to see the search function being used before another repeat thread!

There have been issues with the HD's on this body style truck. I don't know why Bilstein designed it that way, but it's not a good design. Your bushings and stuff look that way because of what's happening...on bigger bumps and stuff that require close to full suspension extension, the shock is fully extending before the suspension gets to the end of its natural travel. The shock is limiting the travel instead of the bumb stop on the control arm...not good IMO. Only a matter of time before something breaks...most likely the stud/rod thing off the top of the shock.

I haven't heard of this issue with other brands, nor I have I experienced it. The only shock I ever had on a stock truck was Edelbrocks and I don't recall this issue.

I just had to replace mine on m 98 F150. When changing the oil recently, I noticed that the bar was loose. Saw that a couple of the rubber mounts were missing, so replaced both of them. Didn't take long and was pretty easy.
