idling and gas mileage?
Hey I did a few searches to find this answer, but came up empty..does anyone out there know approximately how much gas is used for idling to warm up our trucks..say for 10 minutes or some other amount of time? Just curious because I'm trying to figure what my mpg's would be in the warmer weather without warming up for cold temperatures.
Awesome question, I have the same one. I usually get 300miles on a tank, but ever since I got my remote start and idle my truck to warm up, I'll probably get around 250miles on the tank. I let mine warm up 10-20mins due to having to leave at 0530 for work and my truck is frozen.
I usually warm up for 10 minutes 3 times per day most days, so that's a half hour per day. When the weather was nice and I wasn't doing the warm up, I usually got 13-14 mpg average..but I recently had my spark plugs changed and I'm at 12 and a half right now with the low fuel light soon to come on, and that's with all the warm up time..so I'm wondering if I can get 15 or more when the nice weather gets here..that wouldn't be very bad for a full size 4x4.
My V6 burns 0.45 GPH at 850 RPM. 30 mins = 0.225 gallons. So for 15 minutes it costs me $0.30
Warming up your truck isnt going to have the smallest inpact on your gas mileage. I watch mine like a hawk and for 10 minutes out of a whole tank your probably losing .1 or .125 mpg
