Tire size for an 03 FX4

I have a 2003 FX4 and am wandering what is the biggest tire size I can put on there. Factory is the 265/70/17. I've heard quite a few options. They are as follows

305/70/16
285/70/17
285/75/16

I would assume staying with a 17 since that is factory. I want to go to a bigger tire without having to get a lift kit. Maybe a few years down the road I'll get one, but for now I'd just like to get bigger tires. Also I don't want to screw anything up so I'd like to make sure I get a bigger tire, but don't go overboard and have to end up tweaking other things.

Any advice is appreciated as well as any suggestions on tire. I've heard Nitto's are good as well as others.

Thanks

285/70/17 without having to cut any plastic.

The absolute largest tire you can fit using the OEM wheels is a 315/70-17 (35x12.50). They will rub the frame slightly at full steering lock. I wouldn't go that large unless you plan on a lift kit in the near future. At stock height, I think a 285/70-17 (33x11.50), 295/70-17 (34x12.00) or a 305/65-17 (33x12.50) would be a better choice.

The 285/70/17 is your best bet. Looking at mine the other day I see how close that size is to hitting the valance in front telling me any bigger will need adjustment. You won't be disappointed with this size. See my gallery for pics, absolutely stock setup. Another point is going to this size trues up my speedo to a hair off GPS accurate which surprised me.

Hey wolf did you put any lift on yours for those tires? And do they rub on anything?

285 BFG all terrain is the way to go. I have nitto terra grapplers on stock wheels for winter and while they're a good tire for the money, they aren't quite as good as the bfg..I like them quite a bit though

No lift just turned the torsions up and since I have 10 inch wide wheels I had to trim the front valance a little bit and now no rubbing
