starter?

so some-one slashed two of the tires on my truck; so I found a set of lightning rims & tires for it (pics to come); but now it won't turn over; very recently replaced alt; belt/tensioner - battery is pretty recent (and seems to be lots of accessory power; it clicks once and thats it;

I think its the starter - tough to find on the 4.2; if its what I think it is you can't see it from above; and it sits passenger side just behind the lower A-arm?

anyhow, tapped and banged it best I could from below; and truck still no start. Any other thoughts on what the prob might be?

btw, there is a leak into the truck; but carpets up front seem dry and leak seems contained to under back seat of ext cab.

thx

My experiance has been that ford starters RARELY fail. Check your connections then try shorting the big post to the small post on the firewall relay/solenoid if it starts replace the solenoid. I've replaced several perfectly good starters.. Dont make the same mistake.

The solenoid attached to the starter fails more often than the starter itself. Terminology - the component on the firewall or fenderwell is a relay, but also called a solenoid. There is also a real solenoid on the starter.
