Fuel line/filter problems!!!

ok, so to start off, I am a poor person.
I was running low on gas and let it go well beyond E on my f150. This was the lowest I have ever had it. The truck was running fine while I drove it, but when I went to start her up again, she wouldn't start. I put gas in it and she still wouldn't start. I am guessing, because my spark plugs were sparking that deposits from the bottom of the tank clogged the fuel filter or the line, or that my pump went out. Any ideas?? Would this be the problem? If so, what should I do about it? DO you think that just replacing the fuel filter should be the first thing that I do? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I have not checked for pressure yet, it is too late to go to a store now and I wanted to wait to get a filter before I took anything apart. The theft light is not flashing, the odometer was working, i did check for spark with a screw driver and i had it on both coil packs. Is there a way to check for pressure without taking the world apart??

Rent or borrow a fuel pressure gauge and connect it to the Schrader valve on the fuel rail.

If you let it run that low, definitely change the fuel filter. However, running it low like that is not a good idea from this standpoint - the fuel pump needs to be submerged in fuel to keep it cool.

Just to make sure, see if maybe the inertia switch tripped. It's behind the passenger kick panel, push the red button on it.

i dont have and couldn't get a fuel pressure gauge. I took a tire gauge to see if it would work but there was nothing happened. I tried to stick a pin to try and push the other pin on the valve to get a response and nothing. Is the gauge just not going to do anything or does this mean I have no pressure? And if I have no pressure what should I do then? I am about to go buy a filter so I am trying to get answers as soon as possible. Thanks so far guys!

Sounds like no fuel pressure. I'd get yourself some shop manuals and see if the pump is getting power/ground. Or you could replace the pump
and hope for the best (throwing parts at it gets awfully expensive)

I like to do mine every 50,000 km or 30,000 miles. Some people do them more often. I don't have the manual at work so I am not sure what it says.

Thats what I was thinking 30-50k would be a good time to do it since I don't run my truck past 1/4 to often.

1. - Don't crank more than 5 consecutive seconds/ this shuts the rail down in order to protect converters.

2. - Pumps are self priming of coarse , but you have to bleed the rail once or twice. When the rail over pressurizes with air (no, the regulator doesn't keep that from happening) she won't fire. This usually happens when either the injectors are run completely dry or are replaced with new.

I'm not telling you to do this but,~ you can empty the tank, pull the pump, clean it, put it back together, thro a couple gallons of gas in her and she'll fire right up. You just can't run the injectors dry or you'll have these problems.

Make sure that pumps charging the lines when you turn the key to run, -open the window, you WILL hear it if it's working.

Ahhh, - You most likely have it running by now, the lines will purge air over time, just sitting, so I bet you tried starting after it sat for awhile and it fired right up lol.

Yes jbrew. After a couple days and several gallons she started up. I havent had a chance to get on here to post but yes that is what happened. Should I still replace the fuel filter? My manual says I need a special tool for getting the gas line off, and ive tried pulling, it doesnt just come off. Too bad the tool that i THINK is the right one is $25 at o'reillys. lol I aint buyin that. Can I just use a set of plyers or something? How did you do it?

If you purchase a Motorcraft filter, a plastic tool is in the box, -it comes with

If by chance it doesn't, -the aluminum Ford tool can be found at any 3rd party supplier, but their only 5 - 10 bucks.

Look up or google the "how to" - There's a few out there, there may be one here, not sure.

But yea, that's what happens when the injectors are bled dry.

Glad you got her goin.
