sooo.... my wheel fell off today... curious? pics inside

So on my way home from work, my rear driver side wheel fell off. I slowly pulled off the road thinking i had a blowout, and the grinding i heard was my rim, turns out my entire wheel fell off. The bolts sheared completely off, all 5 of them and i cant for the life of me figure out how?!? so as i steered off the road i noticed to the left of me that my wheel continued on down the on ramp without me.... its embarrassing to walk 300 feet then down an embankment to retrieve a tire.... not so much retrieving the tire... but walking back while rolling it next to you as all the cars pass by and people looking is very embarrassing... anyway heres the pics, only a cell phone sorry.

Ill know more about the damage tomorrow when i call les shwaab as this happened after hours.

if you look at the FARTHEST reflector dealie, thats about how far my tire rolled, than about 100 feet down an embankment.

ughmm
wow
ha that sucks man. when was the last time you had anything done that involved your tires?
i would think that the only way ALL five would get sheared off at the exact same time is if the lugs were ridiculously over-torqued.

doesnt look like you came out too bad tho, definately couldve been worse.

So Sorry to hear about your truck. Hope you're up and running soon. Les Schwab does good work. I been with them for 24 years.

Looks like all 5 studs got yanked out! Any wobbleing or vibrations?

Looks like your lug nuts came loose, usually when this happens the wheel will wobble and wear away at the studs untill they break. Being on the rear im not surprised you didnt feel it. I will bet money that if you look at your wheel the holes will be very egged out and damaged so you will need a new wheel as well. Always remember to re-torque your wheels about 50 miles after installation ESPECIALLY with aftermarket wheels...they always seem to come loose more often. I have also run into a few cases with custom wheels where the closed end type lug nuts were not deep enough bottoming out on the stud before the right amount of torque is applied to the wheel. Sometimes they work well on new wheels but as the taperd area wears from frequent removal/install the nuts start to bottom out. Just something to check out.

Glad to hear no one was injured and the damage is minimal. Talk about "running the truck till the wheels fall off". To some, reaching that statement means it's time for a new truck!

yup over torqued wheels means studs are stretched and will be fatigued.

happen'd to my GF's 4x4 blazer last year.

Did you take the rotor off? or did you try to drive in reverse and it popped off?

what im looking at right now you'll need
New Rotors L + R
New Brake Pads L + R
New Caliper minimum L prolly should do R too
New Axle shaft L
5 new wheel studs

he may or may not need a new axleshaft. i was able to pound the five wheel studs out of mine, and pound five more in when i was in a similar situation.

I need a new axle shaft, new brakes, new rim yada yada. 1300 bucks. the lugs were loose, i recently had my 35s put on so the tire guy i had do it is going to get a call from my insurance company ha ha.

i did back the truck up, my dad lives close by so we tried to get it up on a flatbed trailer to avoid towing it, but we couldnt, so i had to get it farther onto the shoulder so it wasnt hanging in traffic.
