because the 4.2s have an 8.8 axle, not a 9.75.

9.75s take the abuse of running way oversized tires much better than the 8.8s.

ETA: i think the 4.6s also came with the 8.8...not sure tho, correct me if im wrong.

That's true but does he really do that much off roading? If he's only making so much hp. He should be ok.

It is not the offroading he is worried about. He is worried about a 8.8 rear end running 38" tires. An 8.8 rear end is rather small so having a 9.75 would benefit him when it comes to having huge tires because its stronger and most of them are limited slip.

i had entertained the idea of going to a bigger rear end when running such big tires. its not that it will get insane amounts of abuse which it could very well but my options would be a 9.75 or the 10.25 from the 7700 package. i found a 7700 and was looking into it as an option, plus the 5 lug axle cant do as much as a 6 or 7 lug outside the power that my truck currently makes. it wasnt really about the 10.25 over the 9.75 it was what was available.

and i think the 9.75 might have been an option with the 4.6 but i talked to 1ba150 and hes running an 8.8 with his 4.6 so i may be good but im just exploring my options

Yea, thats how I roll haha.

You could probably find a 4.6 and a TP that would have a 9.75 rear end.

Ok. I see where your coming from. A 9.75 could benefit you, but gatorcrew is running a 8.8 with supercharged motor but he doesn't offroad.

How much do you offroad and what type?

for now ive kept it simple in my truck since i recently just got my 33" AT's and before didnt do much more than simple driving around with friends then riding in the 4x4s through the thick stuff. i havent gotten this one stuck...yet and ive been through some thick stuff last yr with a load and where other 4x4's got stuck.

i plan on having the ability go play in the mud and just trail ride. i trail ride and we head out to the ranch every once and a while and drive around which doenst worry me. i just wont want to blow something like the only axle i got while out somewhere, that would be bad news. i just figured while regearing and having the suspension apart it would be the time to look at something like that.

I wouldn't worry about the 8.8 blowing up on you. I used to have a 4.6 with that rear end and it worked fine with the 5spd. It would break traction before the axle would break pulling someone out. You should be ok.

Only thing is that he has a 5.4 which means 9.75 and probably LS. Not to mention he is tuned well atleast somewhat. I hadnt even thought about Gator Crews truck. That would have been something to mention. Jake's would probably be fine, but its funner to spin both of the tires at the same time. Not just the right rear

I've had 3.55's for over a year and it's ok with a programmer. But I think 35's with a 4.56 ratio and a 4.2 and 35's should do you just fine unless you go with 38's.
