Transmission Fluid and Filter Change

Planning on changing the fluid on my transmission this weekend. I have heard that the type, most likely a 4R70W, is listed in the door sill... but I am having a tough time deciphering it.

A: Do I have a 4R70W?
B: I am going to drain the Torque Converter as well, any concerns?
C: How many qts am I going to need? I have heard 9... and its Mercon V

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Jeff

You have a 4R70W, and your torque converter has a drain plug. You will need 14 quarts of Mercon V ATF. If you want to change the fluid in the transfer case while you are at it, that's 2 quarts of the same fluid.

Transfer case takes the same fluid as Trans?? Show you how much I know---or DON'T know!!! I thought it'd be some special weight gear oil or something---DirtySCREW

The converter holds a heck of a lot more than 3 quarts. A dry fill of a 4R70W is 14 quarts, but a pan drop only takes 5 quarts. Ford automatics had converter drain plugs up till sometime in 2001. All 97+ F-150 transfer cases take ATF.

Transfer cases used ATF earlier than 97.

My 91 F250 used ATF in the T-case.

I'm sure ATF transfer cases go back farther than that - I was saying it in the context of this exact forum - 97-03 F-150.

Drop the pan, replace the filter, drain the torque converter, fill with new fluid. Reuse the pan gasket.
