humming noise

so my dads truck is having a weird problem. its a 2002 4.6 82k 2wd screw, the problem is that when you get up to about 40mph there is is loud humming noise coming from the front end. it kinda sounds like a tire noise but its not. theres really no problem with the truck(power loss etc.) but my dads kinda paranoid about it.

thanks

May be a front wheel bearing starting to go.

The bearings develope pits in them from water or lack of grease and when they roll over the race, it makes a humming noise. Will only get worse it that is it.

Depending on the set up you can eat your hub or race also then having to replace those as well.

Take it out for a drive and when it starts making the humming noise hold your speed and go left to right with the wheel. Sound should get worse when you load up on the side that is bad. Then jack up the front end and check for play.

^ good point. I did notice that on mine when I would turn slightly to one side. Front wheel bearings on mine went around 85K also.

I changed my bearings a couple of months ago. Left side first then the right side went.

I get the humming with the wheel to the left. Are the left ones bad when this happens? I packed them pretty well with grease maybe not enough. I didn't change the seal. Could that be a propblem? Its a 98 2wd.

Adding to my last post.

Turn the wheel right I have humming, turn to the left its quiet. Does that mean the right side is going? When I changed the bearings. Left side, inner and outer. Right side just the outer. Did not change the inner seal on either side. Should I have changed both bearings at the same time on the right side aswell as the seals?

Well it would be good insrance to do so since you already had it a part it wouldn't have been that much more.

If it hums when you turn the wheel right it's the left bearing that's under load and that's the one which is bad. It's usually a good idea to replace both bearings and the seals. You also need to inspect the spindle and the bearing races.
