Towing capacity??

Just got an '03, v6 with the "tow package" so the owner says. How can I confirm that the truck does in fact have the package and what are the towing limits with and without the package? If I have the package, what modifications do I have? Thanks!

what does the tow hitch look like?

do you have an automatic or a manual transmission?

look up front by the radiator, do you have 2 coolers or one??

If the truck has an aftermarket hitch, you can be sure it does not have the tow package. I'm not an expert on what Ford offered, but I would be surprised if there was a tow package offered for the V6.

My 03 V-6 has a factory tow package.

The factory tow package on a manual transmission is a class 3 frame-mounted hitch, 3.55 gears, and a preinstalled 4 pin wiring harness with 7 pin available. Max towing capacity with a manual is 3500# with 3.55's and 2000# with 3.08's. I would assume with an automatic you would get an aux tranny cooler, and max capacity with an auto is 5000#.

I'm pretty sure my '99 XL V6 4X4 has a factory tow package (I bought it used). Frame hitch, 7 pin connector, 7 pin to 4 pin adapter wrapped in a Ford bag in the glove box, 130A alternator all appear to be factory to me.

Let me add that I really like my truck. It does all I ask of it very well, but I have to chuckle when I see this burly hitch on a truck that can barely get out of it's own way!

7800# GCWR isn't very heavy - that's truck *AND* trailer........

I spent 2 summers ago shuttling back and forth from Chicago to Joplin with a 5x8 enclosed trailer - the trips south were with full trailer and bed. It towed JUST FINE in 100 degree heat with the A/C on and I got 15 mpg. JUST FINE means I was able to maintain at least 55 mph up the hills on I-44 west of St. Louis and the majority of the trip was in 5th gear with the cruise control on.

I have a 98 with a 4.2
a 97 with a 4.6
a 98 expy with a 5.4.

The expy has the power, no doubt about it. but that 4.2 is only 20 hp difference than the 4.6 They both pull ok, as long as your not in a hurry. But when towing, I don't get in too big of a hurry anyway
