lights behind grill positioning

for those of you who have the lights behind your grill of your 97-03, how did you mount them? all i can see is just the plastic piece from the grill, im thinking about taping into that to put my lights but is it too weak to hold a 6" light? i dont see anywhere that i could mount a steel bar or anything to back there. ideas?

or even those who have them on their newer or older trucks.

i think some have fabricated a bracket to hold lights. i was talking to someone else on here and he said he mounted them to the plastic.

thats what i was thinking...the plastic seems tough and think enough. but with 2 150W lights its going to get pretty hot...would it be hot enough to melt the plastic you think?

I'm planning on doing this to my '99 in the near future.

From the little research I've done, it appears some mount them on the plastic bar you see through the grill, while others hang them down from the upper radiator support. Mounting them on the plastic bar puts the lights towards the upper portion of the grill opening, while hanging them down from the radiator support allows you to center the lights horizonally in the grill opening. After searching this forum for a while, I finally found one picture of a simple mount someone built to hang them from the radiator support.

When I do finally decide on lights and do the install, I plan on writing up a quick install guide, as there doesn't seem to be a lot on info on this forum on the exact procedure for '97-'03.

That might have been me regarding the simple mount. I utilized the upper rad mount with a bracket that bridges across to the grill support (fiberglass or plastic piece) so I could get the lights as close as possible to the grill. Then, I drilled a hole through the metal bracket and the fiberglass support and mounted my lights using the supplied hardware......this makes a nice strong mount for your lights. BTW...if you chose to go with my method the largest lights you can fit without cutting the grill support is 7 inches, like my IPF's.

There is a cross brace that goes across the bottom, made of plastic or fiberglass. The brace has 2 parts to it, an upper and a lower. I cut the upper piece so the light brackets sit on the lower piece and it looks perfect centered and great.

Does this make sense? Hard to see because everything is black, but if you look closely you can see my "bridge" bracket and at the end where it is attached to the grill support you can see the nut where my light is mounted.

I mounted my 2 strobe lights to the middle fiberglass part of the grill, it is plenty strong-probably about 1/4" thick, made a bracket for it and drilled holes thru the fiberglass and used some bolts, works great and looks pretty cool too. I will try to get some pics this week. Good Luck!!!
