Heater Core in 98

I didn't know where else to post this. How hard is it to replace the heater core in a 1998 Scab 4x2? The one in my daughters truck went out and she has been quoted anywhere from 800.00 to 1000.00. I understand that the a/c unit has to be removed to get to it. Any help and/or advice would be appreaciated. Thanks.

WOW, someone is trying to take advantage of your daughter.
I have replaced a cpl of heater cores in my day. They are a pain but not hard to do. I have not, and hope I don't have to change out the one in my truck.
I wouldn't hesitate to do it, if I had to.
Best advice. Go buy a Haynes repair manual. Chapter 3 covers the removal and installation proceedure for the heater core. Really, not a bad job and you do not have to remove the A/C unit. That's ridiculaous, I didn't need to look in my manual to get that info. The last one I did a few yrs ago, I made it easy on myself and removed the passanger side bucket seat 1st. Makes it alot easier. Trust me !
Open the link below, you will be sick when you find out how inexpensive the replacement heater core will cost you.

Good luck with it.

Not to argue with you ONELOWF, but as I stated, the job will be a pain. I should have added time consuming as well. To me it wouldn't be a big deal just a real pain. I probably won't use the term "big deal" again because that refers to my own knowledge and thinking. I know the Haynes manuals can be vague on some proceedures so I am going to trust you, that the dash has to be removed because I havn't had to replace my heater core. From what I have read in my manual and from the few illustrations that they show, I didn't see where the dash had to be removed. I really hope I don't get tested and have to find this out for myself.
A big deal to me is doing the head('s), exchanging a tranny, etc.

I tried opening the link you had in your post and it would open from your post but I can't access the link in the 1st post from "AlanT" . I assume it's because I have window's Vista, or something else blocking me access. I run into that from time to time.
I wish there was a way to get access to it. I would like to read it and save it to my repair folder on my computer just in case I need it sometime.

Hey Brew, you have any ideas on how I can get that link open and saved.

tjk - I just tried the link and it it works OK. Do a search of 'heater core' and that that will come up - author is AlanT. The jest of it is two guys did the job in an eight hour Saturday, and another poster in the thread said he was quoted
$ 1,250.

I got it !
I saved it to "my downloads" and then converted it with what Window's Vista chose to open it with. It automatically coverted the file to read with my Microsoft Works .doc file.
That is an excellent write up.
The only part that gives me concern is the handling of the airbag system.
No worries tho, I will still tackle the job if I have too.
Let's hope, I don't have to.
Thanks again for the info.
