4.6 5speed

back b4 i bought my truck i was looking at a 4.6 5speed.. thought it was no good moved on and got the truck i have.. now 3 years later im browsing craigslist today and i come a across a 98 4.6 5speed...needs some work but the guy wants 1850 for it.. its a std. cab short box fleet side... i was just curious about the 5speed in these trucks.. how do they hold up??? can they handle any power?? are they swappable for a mustang trans?? any info would be great...the old 4r70w can be boring, and i miss the mustang but my insurance wouldnt like it much if i got another stang...

The 5 speed can't handle much more than a stock 4.6. It's a light duty tranny, but if you don't beat on it, it will last. The slave cylinders do go out a lot, and it's internal, the tranny has to be pulled to change it.

I have never owned an automatic as I prefer manual. I've had several mustang and F150 manuals and this is about the worst one. It's actually made by Mazda and is the same as used in the Mazda B-series and Ranger Pickups much to my chagrin. I've had the Mazda tranny in a 94 150 5.0L, 95 150 4.9L, 98 F150 4.6L, and 99 F150 4.6L and they've all held up with stock power but all have had hang-ups shifting from 1st to 2nd especially when cold are jsut all around clunky. I've only had one slave cylinder fail and as mentioned above, the tranny had to be dropped for the swap. If you're keeping the truck stock, you'll be fine and if you do tear one up, a rebuilt only runs $850 which is far cheaper than any work on an automatic. As for swapping in a mustang tranny, I doubt you'll want to do that as I blew out reverse in a T-5 with ease and the truck will likely have more torque than the 95 mustang's 5.0L.

They are not clunky as long as your pilot bearing isn't dragging and your shift forks aren't damaged.

It is similar, but NOT the same tranny as in the B and Ranger. That's a M5OD-R1, we have a M5OD-R2. Ours is decidedly stronger.

yes i know this is a old thread but im goning back and re-reading alot of these. i have a 03 4.6 5 speed 4x4, ive decided to make it my mid life crisis toy. currently she is stock but eventually i want to add long tubes, and duals, efans, CAI, and maybe a tuner, no hugh hp gains, but if i can add 50-75 hp then that would be cool. anyway has anyone ever found a shop or builder that can beef up he 5speeds in these ??

Thanks All
Troy

try the tranny section. I personally dont think the MSOD if a very good performance tranny and dont think it can can be buillt to handle a whole lot but I dont really know that much about them. Had a 90 F150 that had one only had it for about a year and obviously I didnt think much of it.

JMC has a procharged 5.4 in front of his originally 4.6 equipped 5 speed truck and he has nothing good to say about the weak tranny.

he is researching the compatability of a ZF 6 speed
