4.2 CAI Advice
I'm trying to chime in some info- I have a K&N Series 77 chrome tube intake and it most definately helps. Got it for $211.12 on the internet.

But what is this "Gotts" thing? Is it a home-made intake that runs better than a factory-made one?

The Gotts intake is a cheap adaptation of the factory setup to allow more airflow. See tarajerame's links above. He has pictures posted. I did the mod to mine and added a 5.4 filter box to have a larger diameter air inlet. I also added a k&n filter.
I know there may be other factors,(warmup time, hwy vs mtn roads, fuel blends) but my mileage went from around 16 to over 19. I will check closer after the spring weather gets more stable. I will try my factory setup again and compare the two under the same driving conditions.

This is a mix. I live in the mountains and have very little city/town driving, less than 10%. My usual drive is on a 2 lane mtn road at speeds averaging 40-55. I got about 15.5 in my first 2 tanks with this truck but this included some hwy towing. I removed the fender snout from the intake to open up some air and no towing and got about 16.5. I did the full Gotts mod with a 5.4 filter box and K&N drop in filter and got just over 19. This did include a hwy trip, 3hrs with some city driving included. However, it has been warmer and I have not needed as much warmup time for melting snow/ice. I am not sure when they begin to change the fuel blends. When the weather and my driving are consistent for a few weeks I will try it with and w/o the Gotts and see the difference.
I am not saying that it is all due to the intake mod, but something sure helped.

Sounds good. Def would have done it have I heard about it before my K&N days, but its not giving me any troubles (knock on wood) so I'm going to stick to my trusty orange and red.

I don't get it.
I don't see how that trashcan or any of those other heat shields is any better than the stock setup, other than having bigger air filters.
The stock intake is cold air- it could be colder air if you wrapped the housing, but the stock air path enters from outside of the engine bay.

1. Cold air
2. Air flow (restrictions)
Ford has it covered on the cold air, and maybe better than some of the add ons.
With air flow, the factory setup has some limitations. The rubber snout that goes through the fender well is about 1/2 inch smaller diameter than the opening in the filter box. On the 4.2, the opening on the airbox is smaller than on the 5.4. Changing the filter box and replacing the rubber snout with a larger inside diameter pipe, my intake entrance tube, according to my calculations has roughly 44% more volume.
The hp and torque charts for CAI's show most of the power gains at higher rpms, where my truck will practically never run. It may not be worth it for me to get one. The advantage in the CAI's I have checked on is a smoother airway than my factory tube. This and improved air volume probably give more benefit from the add ons than colder air. But, I am not an expert and have no personal experience with a CAI setup.
you're right the factory set up gets more ambient air than the CAI's, hence the "gotts intake mod" but since others were highjacking the thread talkingabout crappy CAI's I tossed up the homemade heat shields for them
Yea, thanks for those tara! I think I found what I'm going to try and do while I'm off for spring break, and not working on Calculus or Chemistry
anytime, since I learned the hard way and am now well past the point of basic boltons, I am just trying to help people get the best bang for the $$$ with what they have or what they want to get
