4.6 swap
4.6 swap
Ive just got a 98 with the 4.6 that has a blown head?? not sure, the truck has 130,000 and it came with another motor a 4.6 with 60,000 so I'm gonna do the swap...Does any body out there have any advice and tricks, to overcome problems they've run into during the process or is it pretty straight forward!?
Purchase a shop manual, read and follow the instructions. It will list all the little things that have to be done. It is not difficult to do but if you forget one simple thing you can wind up pulling a harness apart or damaging the engine bay. One thing to note is that Ford in later manuals has discontinued the use of the 4th bolt on the power steering pump. The fan thread is a standard righty tighty lefty loosey. Some poorly written manuals have this backwards. Regardless of what you may be told, removing the intake manifold is the best, In My Official Opinion, way to pull the engine.
So finally have the truck up and running and trying to work through getting all the kinks out of it. The truck was sitting before for about 4 years before I purchased it.
Found out the motor came out of a 95 Cougar so wasnt completly straight forward but swapped the intake manifold, valve covers, and a the truck accesories and so far so good. I did run into the problem of the old motor not having two of the sensors that the 98 had one in the front top center of the block, and one towards the back took both out of the old motor but theres no place for them to go in this one. I figured I would have problems with the computer and check engine light but again so far so good, runs good up and down the back roads. Going to license it tomorrow and start the real testing.
I had an issue with the heater core in the beggining with the truck over heating like crazy and shooting steam out of all the vents, I by-passed the two connections for the heater core with a piece of tubbing and fixed the problem for now. Will probably run it like this for now until it gets closer to winter and I have time to replace the heatercore.
Does anybody have any suggestions on any maintance to do in the upcoming weeks to? The truck was sitting for so long I just dont want anything bitting me in the butt.
Also any suggestions on exhaust or other upgrades, for millage boosts or performance, I'm probably going to baby it for awhile to make sure I've got it running good before doing anything, but just wondering what kind of tuner, chip, air filter, exhaust luck you guys have had.
I have Lighting stock exhaust I can buy off a guy for $50. wondering if thats going to do anything for me other than looks. It was only on his truck for 2 years and about 15,000 as he babies it but has been sitting for awhile, but I thought it was a good deal.
I'll post pics up soon, By the way my truck is a tan on tan (not sure the color name) 98 F-150 4x4 Strech Cab Longbed with the 4.6l.
I know theres alot of ?s in here lol but sorry just had alot I've wanted to post during the build but spent most of my time on here searching for answers.
Thanks
