Rear suspension clunk

I've been noticing an occasional clunk on my '01 coming from the rear. I first noticed it a couple weeks ago when I was on a dirt road and went up over an uneven spot. When the suspension flexed there was a clunk in the rear suspension. I've also noticed it a few times since in regular driving conditions that also caused some suspension flex. Any ideas? Truck has about 99k miles on it. All my searches on here have led to rear end and driveshaft info.

Good Luck on this one. My 97 does the exact same thing. The mechanics can't seem to figure it out either. Sounds just like something shifting in the rear suspension. Its not the u-joint either cause I replaced those. Definitely comes from the rear though!

I can't figure mine out neither, weather affects it likely, like expansion of rubber and that kinda thing. I've looked it over well, and rule it "one of those things".

my 2000 does this too, at first i thought it was all the junk in my tool box banging around but then relaized it's something else in the rear, looked into it further and basically got no where 20,000 miles later truck still hasn't skipped a beat. can't be too serious what ever it is. just turn up the radio

Add me to the list, my '02 does it when I turn onto an uphill grade (just about any driveway around here).

98- mine just started. I was worried but I can't find the noise either. Like others have said it can be heard mainly when going over uneven spots.

add me to the list. sounds almost like ball joints popping, but its definately not. and its definately in the rear. just like the other cases though, only happens when the truck starts to flex.

My 97 does it and, I too, thought it was the crap in my toolbox sliding around. Since I am a NewB I am glad to hear its nothing serious.....

Mine does it too but i think its the leaf springs cause mine doesn't have the clip to keep it together and it looks like its sliding apart and only does it when it flexs

well, ive seen all heritage years except a 99... strike it off the list, ive got 115k miles on it and noise is in the drivers rear, i have been able to narrow that much down. look closely to the shackles and hangers, i love my fords, but they could have been better built... also look into the leaf spring bushings, noticed that mine was cracked

Rear Disc Brakes? Does it sound like a loose lug nut inside a hubcap? If so check the emergency brake inside the disc
