odometer display

Howdy all,
A quick question concerning my odometer. Every so often it disappears for a while and then comes back on. Anyone else ever experienced this problem?

Thanks,
Craig

There is a thread on here about it. Go to the electrical section and it is a sticky at the top.

Yup, bad solder connection. I thought it was funny when I took my truck to the local dealership and nobody had heard of the problem

I have just dealt with it for now - hopefully some day I'll need to do some mod involving the dash so I can then fix the problem.

I had a 1999 F150 XLT and it had the same problem (so doese my current truck, 2000 F150) with the odometer going real dim and sometimes diasapearing. I just tap on the instrument cluster and sometimes that makes it come back. But like i was gonna say, it is most likely a short somewhere in the guage cluster and the only way to fix it is to get a new instrument cluster. at least thats what Ford told me and i got a new when i had to get a new computer and theft module on my 1999.

Actually it should be a bad solder connection. There should be a write up somewhere on the forums (check tech arcticles) that tells you to pull the dash apart, take the cluster out, check the one or two spots and, if needed, touch em up with a solder pencil

I am glad to see this thread. This actually has happened to me a couple of times now. The most recent was last night. It stayed off for about 45 sec.

The thread in the electrical section looks to be very straight forward and a great fix. I am going to give it try ASAP.

Yes it's a common problem. Reference the electrical section for self-repair. Or go to your local dealership and get hosed. I haven't bothered fixing my OD, it still logs the mileage appropriately.

I have no doubt about the thread and that a crack is the legit cause and that is the correct fix.

I didn't want to tear my dash apart so, I just lived half the time odometer, half the time no odometer for the past few years.

However, I replaced my OEM battery a couple of months ago and my odometer has been bright and steady for two months.

It may go out again, I'm just saying if you happen to need a battery, swap that out first before you take the dash apart.

same here I just deal with it, I`ve taken the dash out one time to replace the blend door that controls the hot and cold air and thats not something you want to do unless you haft to
