Heating Problem.

Looking for any suggestions. I have a 1999 F150 with a 5.4 in it. I noticed this summer that my AC was sort of intermitent. Well here recently I have been trying to use my heat, and sometimes it works right away, and other time it takes several minutes before it works, and well sometimes it doesn't work at all. There doesn't seem to be any pattern. My collant is full, and doesn't have a leak. I like to tinker around a little bit, but I'm not really much of a motor head. I wasn't sure if this was a commom problem that has an easy fix, or if it needs to to be taken to a shop. Any suggestions or ideas would be appreciated.

It may not apply to yours, but I had a similar problem in a 94 model. The heater would work at times and then begin blowing cold air. I checked around under the hood and noticed that the switch on the canister for the AC was unplugged and the wire was bridged. I bought the truck a few months earlier. Someone had bridged this switch so that the compressor would not cycle in and out. It was low on freon. This kept the compressor engaged when the defroster was on, and it appears that the heater coil froze over. It would also be worth checking your coolant flow through your heater coil, if the fan is working. I have seen clogged coils keep things from warming up.

Does your heater work when it is on the floor setting? The AC usually cycles with the defrost to remove moisture. If you have not already done so, try warming the truck with the heater in the off position, then move to the floor position. If it works consistently in this pattern but not in defrost or mix, you may have an AC issue.
Just some ideas. Hope it helps.

I second the blend door, especially since it's intermittent. It could just be getting stuck
