Question Fix it list?...

Just wondering what all you guys think I should do when it comes to tune up/fixing things. I have a 2001 4.2 Scab 2WD. I am open to any suggestions. she has 120k+ on her right now

Ive had the truck since 2004, and this is what Ive done so farnot sure at what mileage these were done at.)

Changed Shocks - March 08
Replaced Front Rotors - July 08
Replaced brake shoes and turned rear rotors - 2006
Replaced cruise control(recall back in 2005)
Recently replced PCV(still think i have a vacuum leak)
Waiting to change fuel filter

anything i need to do?? i plan on replacing O2's soon also....

Thanks alot guys!!

Your front end probably needs a rebuild. The tie rod ends, ball joints and idler arm are high wear items on our trucks.

O2s will be a PITA to get out. a) they might be seized in tight and you may have to heat them to get them out, b) the front pass. side one has very little room to work on it.

Did you check/change the PCV elbow that is hidden between the firewall and the upper intake, just follow the hose around the back of the intake and you should find it. It may have cracked or gone soft and collapsed the air passage.

If you haven't done so already, change the spark plugs (go with motocraft, autolite or denso iridiums, NEVER ever use Bosch plugs in these motors) make sure you gap them properly before you install, should be 0.054" but check the manual to be sure. It may also state the gap on one of the stickers on the radiator cowl when you pop the hood., change the plug wires or COPS depending on the year of the truck, change the fuel filter, you may need the special tool to remove it or just get it done at a shop. Change the oil, of course, so I will assume you have been doing this already Check the rad coolant so make sure it is still good, if you havent had it done yet get the tranny and torque convertor flushed and replace the tranny filter. Also if you havent had it done since you had the truck get the rear diff fluid changed.

thats all I can think of at the moment. Hope this didn't scare you too much

nope, not at all. I forgot to put spark plugs on there...lol

but about the PCV elbow, i still hae a really good vacuum at the valve, so is that a good sign that the elbow is still good??

and yea the dealership wanted me to have them change the fuel filter and flush the tranny last time i got my oil change, and i said no because i still wanted to have some $$...so that will come maybe at thanksgiving. and maybe the rear diff too.

I would change:

rear diff fluid
front diff fluid
tranny fluid
T-case
lube every point I could find
radiator flush
rotate your tires

If you have the owners manual, there is a seperate booklet that breaks down everything that needs to be done by every 5,000 miles, and makes special suggestions for high use, dusty conditions etc.

yea. i kinda want to do it anonymously though, because my parents are still co-signed on my checking account i got when i was 16...i took a look at alon's prices over at modbargains, and i think i might just send him a money order for them. $52 for 2" drop shackles isnt too bad, IMO....

do you know when you might be up next?

That would be great! That way I can just grab some cash and pay you back. If you can find a used set that you think are trustworthy Im ok with that. Just PM me or shoot me and email whenever you get more details.

well ive driven my dads 7.3 w/ a straight pipe, and i would love to have one of those!

as for the 4.2, i will never regret owning it! its been an awesome first truck. i will go for a v8 next time, but the 4.2 will stay as a possible TT project.

Within the last two years I've done the following:

- Replaced upper and lower ball joints
- New tires (285/70R17 Open Country Toyo A/Ts)
- Replaced transmission (went out at 110,000 miles)
- Coolant exchange
- New fuel filter
- Complete tune-up (all 8 spark plugs replaced)
- Differential flush
- Fuel System Cleaning
- Replaced brake pads

She's pretty much a new truck. I do oil changes and other related things religiously. The only thing I have left is shocks. They are my factory shocks still...

The truck's still runnin' strong.
