I'm running Mobil 1 EP 5w20. I have 98k miles.

If you have 180k and no issues, just keep using what you have been using. The "recommended" oil is Motorcraft semi-synthetic 5w20.

I usually Put a long Screw Driver through the filter to get it loose. That breaks it loose. After that is easy.

Never had that gasket get left behind.

When I bought my truck a month ago, I negotiated free lifetime oil changes every 3000 miles as part of the deal.

yes, the 97 and 98 both have the 'fang' bumper and the filter up front and so conveniently relocated on the 99-03.

i've always used the motorcraft syn-blend 5w20 and haven't had a single issue

Im in the middle of attempting to removing my oil filter for my first time on my 2001 f150. I think this will be the last. I cant get a screwdriver or a strap wrench up there. I can barely get my hand up there and cant twist it off. The positioning of the oil filter blows.

Same thing happen to me this week. The look on my face must have been priceless when i saw the oil spraying out from under the truck.

It was dark out, the first cold night of the season ( 55 deg in Florida) and first time I changed the oil since i bought her. Had there been more light i probably would have noticed the old filter ring up there.

i am the service manager at a repair facility, and what we do to "lower the probability" of a double gasket is once the tech starts the engine to get the oil circulating, he lifts the vehicle back up to check on any leaks from the filter and/or the drain plug. then they put the vehicle down, shuts vehicle off, & then checks the oil level.

but double gaskets are such a pain. if i end up doing the oil change i usually check just prior to putting the new filter on. then to be safe, i use my finger & physically touch the housing to make sure there is no gasket. a lot of the techs think im being too **** about things. but when buying an engine comes out of my paycheck/bonus...to me that's just being cautious.

I took my old Beretta to a quick oil change place once that used a lift, not a pit. I was watching the guy do the oil change - after he let it down and put the oil in, all he did was start it and run it till the oil light went out and shut it off and gave me the bill. I asked him if he was going to check for leaks. He refused to do it, saying that "it ain't gonna leak because I did the job". I never went back to that place.

Nobody changes my oil, but me! Christ, if a can't take 15 minutes out of every 3000 miles. That's pretty sad. But that's me!

i know what you mean. but for some, me included, it's almost not worth it with some of the specials that some places are giving for oil changes. there are some as low as $10 (havent seen those in a while though). where supplies alone could cost anywhere from $7 to $15 (of course depending on what parts you are using). for the cost of $3 to $5 dollars i dont have to get dirty or worry about where im going to bring the used oil.

although, i usually do my own oil changes @ my shop, lol. it's nice having a lift....no more crawling on the ground.

This guy was the owner............

Independent one bay shop, not a chain. I guess I got what I paid for, his price was $15.95 for a full service oil change and lube job.
