F-150 Beats Mustang in Whipple-Supercharged Ford Duel

By -

F-150 uses four-wheel-drive to overcome the big weight advantage of the Mustang GT.

The current Ford F-150 and the current Ford Mustang GT are both offered with the 5.0-liter Coyote V8, but the engines are tuned differently for their different uses. However, the same basic aftermarket upgrades that apply to the pony car will also work on the pickup, so F-150 owners who want to go fast benefit from the popularity of the high performance Mustang GT crowd.

The video above comes to us from the Boosted F-150 YouTube channel and it shows how similar performance upgrades, including a Whipple supercharger, impact each of these two vehicles. If you are not familiar with the performance capabilities of the modern Ford pickup, the outcome is likely to surprise you.

The black Ford F-150 in the video above is fitted with a 2.9-liter Whipple supercharger sporting a 3-inch pulley. To feed this engine, the Ford truck is also equipped with a dual fuel pump setup, ID1000 fuel injectors and an E85 ethanol blend tune that leads to around 950 wheel horsepower. Mind you, that is 950 horsepower at all four wheels, with traction bars and Mickey Thompson ET SS drag radials helping to make the most of all of that power.

5.0 Engine

As for the Ford Mustang, it is powered by a Gen 5 Whipple supercharger, measuring 3.0-liters and outfitted with a 3.875-inch pulley. We know that this blown pony car is tuned to run on E85 as well, so it is making well over 800 horsepower, but we don’t know how much. We also don’t know what other upgrades this car has, but we know that it has the automatic transmission and rear-wheel-drive, of course.

Mustang GT

Bottom line, the F-150 probably has more power and has four-wheel-drive, but it weighs more.

The Battle

The video is dramatic, with lots of different angles of the F-150 and the Mustang GT before and during the run. The four-wheel-drive makes a huge difference at the line, allowing the heavier Ford vehicle to get a better launch, with the F-150 holding a clear lead before the two have passed the Christmas Tree.

F-150 Versus Mustang GT

As the two head down the track, the F-150 just keeps on pulling away, handing the Mustang GT a pretty healthy beating on the top end. The truck runs a 10.29 at 135.02 miles per hour while the pony car runs a 10.69 at 135.88 miles per hour.

F-150 Versus Mustang GT

With a long enough track, the aerodynamics of the Mustang might have allowed it to close the gap, but in the quarter mile, the F-150’s four-wheel-drive setup coupled with big power leads to a whoopin’ for the popular performance car.

"Before I was old enough to walk, my dad was taking me to various types of racing events, from local drag racing to the Daytona 500," says Patrick Rall, a lifetime automotive expert, diehard Dodge fan, and respected auto journalist for over 10 years. "He owned a repair shop and had a variety of performance cars when I was young, but by the time I was 16, he was ready to build me my first drag car – a 1983 Dodge Mirada that ran low 12s. I spent 10 years traveling around the country, racing with my dad by my side. While we live in different areas of the country, my dad still drag races at 80 years old in the car that he built when I was 16 while I race other vehicles, including my 2017 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and my 1972 Dodge Demon 340.

"Although I went to college for accounting, my time in my dad’s shop growing up allowed me the knowledge to spend time working as a mechanic before getting my accounting degree, at which point I worked in the office of a dealership group. While I was working in the accounting world, I continued racing and taking pictures of cars at the track. Over time, I began showing off those pictures online and that led to my writing.

"Ten years ago, I left the accounting world to become a full-time automotive writer and I am living proof that if you love what you do, you will never “work” a day in your life," adds Rall, who has clocked in time as an auto mechanic, longtime drag racer and now automotive journalist who contributes to nearly a dozen popular auto websites dedicated to fellow enthusiasts.

"I love covering the automotive industry and everything involved with the job. I was fortunate to turn my love of the automotive world into a hobby that led to an exciting career, with my past of working as a mechanic and as an accountant in the automotive world provides me with a unique perspective of the industry.

"My experience drag racing for more than 20 years coupled with a newfound interest in road racing over the past decade allows me to push performance cars to their limit, while my role as a horse stable manager gives me vast experience towing and hauling with all of the newest trucks on the market today.

"Being based on Detroit," says Rall, "I never miss the North American International Auto Show, the Woodward Dream Cruise and Roadkill Nights, along with spending plenty of time raising hell on Detroit's Woodward Avenue with the best muscle car crowd in the world.
