F 150 Autocross

Autocross is a fun way to break into racing, where success comes more from driver skill than outright speed.

For truck enthusiasts looking for a cool, safe way to firm up their driving skills, autocross lets you put your F-150 to the test on an actual racing strip. Even better, the ease of access and competitive nature of autocross means that you’ll typically see just about every kind of vehicle participating in it. There are many different classes at most events, covering everything from econoboxes to all-out race cars.

The level of competitors ranges as much as the cars that race. Autocross events are open to novices, and the costs to participate are obviously low. You get the same kind of experience that you would at a full-on race track, but without having to worry about wiping out into a wall. It is all at speeds that don’t exceed what you’d normally drive on public roads (if you’re not a speed demon).

Speeds are generally kept lower than most other forms of racing, but the high number of turns means that you’ll still have a ton of fun. And all of these characteristics make the idea of an autocross F-150 seem not as far-fetched as you may think.

While most of us use our trucks as daily drivers and workhorses, there’s really no reason you can’t take it to your local autocross event on the weekend for some fun. If you have your doubts, I present to you this 2004 F-150, which navigates some traffic cones with no trouble at all.

The most important thing here is that the driver is having an awesome time. He isn’t going to set any records, but that isn’t the point. The point is, he’s having some good clean fun and enjoying his truck in more ways than one. And if nothing else, he’s also honing his skills at the same time. Or should that be “hooning” his skills?
