Why use a can opener to pop the top off of a cold bottle of beer when spinning tires of a Ford F-150 will do the job?

We’ve seen a lot of burnout videos online. Most of them involve some sort of muscle car or high-dollar exotic burning off the top layer of its rear tires and either charging down the road or drag strip ahead. We’ve seen plenty of truck burnouts, too. Four-wheel drive doesn’t mean rear-wheel-drive antics are off the table. But we haven’t come across a burnout video quite like this before, which combines hot rubber and cold beer.

We found it on the f150_nation Instagram page. True to the account’s name, it features a Ford F-150. According to its owner and the founder of f150_nation, John Brussard (aka as john_brussard7 on Instagram), it uses its supercharged 5.0 to spin a set of giant 22″ X 14″ aftermarket wheels wrapped in appropriately broad tires. That’s a lot of rubber to burn and Brussard has every intention of doing that, at least when it comes to the rear end.

There’s a twist to Brussard’s burnout, though. A refreshing one. His friend Jake Surprenant (screen name: jakesurprenant) is nearby and thirsty. Only one beverage will do the trick: a cold beer. Too bad he doesn’t have a bottle opener. It looks as if he’ll just have to improvise.

It takes a certain amount of force to pry the cap off of a bottle of beer. If you use the right technique, you can do it with the flat edge of a countertop and a quick smack of your palm. Or you can do what Surprenant does. He waits until his pal Brussard gets the back tires of his F-150 spinning hard, then carefully holds the end of his beer bottle near the top of one of the radial tornadoes.

Surprenant’s patience pays off and soon it’s time for him to throw his head back and take a big swig.

Brussard serves up a great meal to go with Surprenant’s cold one: a batch of giant donuts cooked on a massive flattop griddle.

Derek Shiekhi's father raised him on cars. As a boy, Derek accompanied his dad as he bought classics such as post-WWII GM trucks and early Ford Mustang convertibles.

After loving cars for years and getting a bachelor's degree in Business Management, Derek decided to get an associate degree in journalism. His networking put him in contact with the editor of the Austin-American Statesman newspaper, who hired him to write freelance about automotive culture and events in Austin, Texas in 2013. One particular story led to him getting a certificate for learning the foundations of road racing.

While watching TV with his parents one fateful evening, he saw a commercial that changed his life. In it, Jeep touted the Wrangler as the Texas Auto Writers Association's "SUV of Texas." Derek knew he had to join the organization if he was going to advance as an automotive writer. He joined the Texas Auto Writers Association (TAWA) in 2014 and was fortunate to meet several nice people who connected him to the representatives of several automakers and the people who could give him access to press vehicles (the first one he ever got the keys to was a Lexus LX 570). He's now a regular at TAWA's two main events: the Texas Auto Roundup in the spring and the Texas Truck Rodeo in the fall.

Over the past several years, Derek has learned how to drive off-road in various four-wheel-drive SUVs (he even camped out for two nights in a Land Rover), and driven around various tracks in hot hatches, muscle cars, and exotics. Several of his pieces, including his article about the 2015 Ford F-150 being crowned TAWA's 2014 "Truck of Texas" and his review of the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider, have won awards in TAWA's annual Excellence in Craft Competition. Last year, his JK Forum profile of Wagonmaster, a business that restores Jeep Wagoneers, won prizes in TAWA’s signature writing contest and its pickup- and SUV-focused Texas Truck Invitational.

In addition to writing for a variety of Internet Brands sites, including JK Forum and Ford Truck Enthusiasts, Derek also contributes to other outlets. He started There Will Be Cars on Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube to get even more automotive content out to fellow enthusiasts.
