Average-looking Ford F-150 Runs Mid-11s

By -

Ford F-150 with a supercharged 5.0-liter V8 hits 120 miles per hour in the quarter mile.

If you were sitting in the staging lanes at your local drag strip and you found yourself next to the 2015 Ford F-150 SuperCrew shown in the video above from the Palm Beach Dyno YouTube channel, you might think that your stock muscle car would have a good chance of winning. However, unless you’re tickling the 10-second range, this full sized pickup might beat you to the quarter mile strip while being able to tow a second race car home in an enclosed trailer.

Blown F-150

The truck in the video above is a 2015 Ford F-150 SuperCrew packing the 5.0-liter V8 and based on the lack of four-wheel-drive badging, we are guessing that this is a rear-drive truck. The video points out that this half-ton truck has a 2.9-liter Gen 2 Whipple supercharger tuned to run on 93 octane pump gas and based on the sound, we are guessing that it has some exhaust system upgrades as well, as it is loud and it sounds great.

In addition to the power-adder under the hood, this F-150 is fitted with aftermarket wheels with some variety of wide drag radial out back. The front wheel-and-tire combo doesn’t appear to be a drag skinny setup, but it doesn’t look to be particularly wide, leading us to further believe that this truck is rear-wheel-drive.

Hitting the Track

The video begins with Bill Kieler pulling his 2015 Ford F-150 easing into the burnout box at Palm Beach Raceway, doing a quick burnout that could have been a little better. The video jumps ahead to the starting line, where the blue Ford is staged and ready to against a serious SVT Lightning. On green, both trucks launch hard and the Whipple’d F-150 appears to dance a bit right off of the line, but it quickly grips and roars down track. The Lightning gets away and takes the win, but the newer half-ton runs an impressive 11.65 at 119 miles per hour.

The second race takes place against another late model F-150 and this time, the F-150 that we are focusing on gets the win with an 11.63 at 119.

Finally, on the last run of the video, the 2015 F-150 takes on another SVT Lightning and while it loses the close drag race, this average-looking pickup runs an 11.472 at 120.69 miles per hour.

"Before I was old enough to walk, my dad was taking me to various types of racing events, from local drag racing to the Daytona 500," says Patrick Rall, a lifetime automotive expert, diehard Dodge fan, and respected auto journalist for over 10 years. "He owned a repair shop and had a variety of performance cars when I was young, but by the time I was 16, he was ready to build me my first drag car – a 1983 Dodge Mirada that ran low 12s. I spent 10 years traveling around the country, racing with my dad by my side. While we live in different areas of the country, my dad still drag races at 80 years old in the car that he built when I was 16 while I race other vehicles, including my 2017 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and my 1972 Dodge Demon 340.

"Although I went to college for accounting, my time in my dad’s shop growing up allowed me the knowledge to spend time working as a mechanic before getting my accounting degree, at which point I worked in the office of a dealership group. While I was working in the accounting world, I continued racing and taking pictures of cars at the track. Over time, I began showing off those pictures online and that led to my writing.

"Ten years ago, I left the accounting world to become a full-time automotive writer and I am living proof that if you love what you do, you will never “work” a day in your life," adds Rall, who has clocked in time as an auto mechanic, longtime drag racer and now automotive journalist who contributes to nearly a dozen popular auto websites dedicated to fellow enthusiasts.

"I love covering the automotive industry and everything involved with the job. I was fortunate to turn my love of the automotive world into a hobby that led to an exciting career, with my past of working as a mechanic and as an accountant in the automotive world provides me with a unique perspective of the industry.

"My experience drag racing for more than 20 years coupled with a newfound interest in road racing over the past decade allows me to push performance cars to their limit, while my role as a horse stable manager gives me vast experience towing and hauling with all of the newest trucks on the market today.

"Being based on Detroit," says Rall, "I never miss the North American International Auto Show, the Woodward Dream Cruise and Roadkill Nights, along with spending plenty of time raising hell on Detroit's Woodward Avenue with the best muscle car crowd in the world.
