2018 F-150 Diesel Prototype Spied Undergoing Tow Testing

2018 F-150 Diesel caught out in the open, wearing old bodywork and hauling a tow rig.

Ford’s has thus far remained silent regarding the forthcoming 3.0 liter Power Stroke diesel. But testing of the new oil burner is in full swing. We’ve already seen a number of 2018 F-150 diesel prototypes running around. But now we’ve got solid confirmation that Ford is testing the towing capabilities of the new motor, thanks to the keen eye of The Fast Lane Truck.

TFLT caught what looks like a mismatched 2017 F-150 among a number of other prototypes at a local hotel in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains recently. The truck was flanked by two white trucks sporting the 2018’s updated front end. But a closer look around the back revealed some juicier details. The “2017” not only sported a 2018 tailgate, but it was hooked up to a towing test rig as well. And a tailpipe that clearly belongs to a diesel engine.

It makes sense that Ford would be testing its latest Power Stroke in some real world conditions at higher elevations. Even if they do have their own special rig that can simulate pretty much any towing scenario. As you already know, this is the first time Ford has put a diesel in the F-150. Obviously, its importance cannot be understated.

Interestingly enough, TFLT speculates at the video’s conclusion that the F-150’s version of the 3.0 liter Power Stroke will essentially be based on Ford’s existing 3.0 liter diesel. The same one that they currently sell to Land Rover for use in the Ranger Rover. However, most still feel like the engine will feature a number of differences, including a more modern injection system.

Regardless of what Ford decides to do with their new 2018 F-150 diesel, we’re getting closer and closer to the groundbreaking engine’s real world debut, so stay tuned!
