It's not really a problem unless the tires are rubbing so bad that they, or sheetmetal is being damaged. However, it can be irritating.

just to let u know i have a 97 2wd that i put a 2 inch coil spacer on to level it and no one would mount a 285/76/16. i had to go with a 265...everyone says itll rub on the inner fenderwell cause i have aftermarket wheels

Well, aftermarket wheels changes things. Wheel width and backspacing are as important to fitment as tire size.

i just measured the backspacing and i think it's only 4.25" as opposed to 4.6" like the guy told me. i dont fully understand backspacing but is 4.25 too little for the 285's? would it just be safer and easier to get 265's?

Since you are using 8 inch wide wheels, I think you will be ok.

It depends. The more backspacing, the more the tire tucks in. The less backspacing, the more the tire sticks out. It's usually a good idea to stick with a backspacing close to the OEM backspacing (4.5 inches in your case), like you are doing.

what if your backspacing is off? i dont know how much mine is, but i put a 3 inch lift on my 99 f150 2wd with 8 inch wide wheels and 285/75/16s. i rub a little in the front when i do sharp turns. thanks for the help.

wouldn't the tire being farther out (less backspacing) result in a little less rubbing?

it would as far as turning goes but when you flex the suspension your looking at body damage, if the tires rub at all. im guessing youre mostly on road so as long as youre not shoving the tires in there then youll be alright. most rubbing occurse at the lower valence. you can cut without anyone knowing the difference.
