Max Wheels and Tires for 2001 4x2 Supercab?

I tried some searches in this forum but didn't find any good results so I thought I'd post my question.

I have a 2001 V-6 Supercab with 255/70 16" and I'm wondering what I can move up to without any vehicle mods and not worry about tire rubbing, etc.

I'm considering 265/70 17" which looks like they may fit.

I've checked out tirerack.com and it looks like that I can run that setup, but I wanted input from this board.

Has anyone run this setup?
Any problems with speedo?
Wear out the engine too fast/early over time?
Any tire rubbing?
What's the max size?

Thanks,

Stubb

I assume you are getting new rims if you want to get a 265/70R17 tire...you currently have 16 inch wheels, so you will need to get 265/75R16 if you want to keep the stock rims.

As for your questions:
1) I am running 265/75R16s now (same overall size as 265/70R17s) and I like them. But I cant compare them to the stock 255s since I bought my truck used and it already had 265s on it. Next time I buy tires I want to move up to 285s though, I think the 265s are a little small for my taste. If I can afford it I want to get 16x8" or 16x10" wheels too.

2) There will be a slight difference (your speedo will read slower than you are actually going), but you are only going up about an inch in size, so its not that big of a change. But if you want to correct it, you can buy a tuner that has the ability to program your computer for the different size tires.

3) You wont notice any problems with the engine by moving to larger tires as far as engine wear. Suspension parts can wear quicker, but again, you arent moving to a drastically larger tire so this wont be too much of an issue (although there will still be some accelerated wear of the components).

4) You should not have any rubbing issues with 265s.

5) Max size for what? 265s are about the largest you can fit on a 4x2 without rubbing. You can go larger but you will have to do some modifications, what modifications depends on how big the tire is.

Johngs,

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, I was considering some 17" wheels if I can find them for a good price on ebay. As for the 265/70 16" - the only thing I'm wondering is that you have a 4x4 and I have 4x2; don't know if your extra 3" of height will make a difference.

No, you can fit 265/75R16s (265/70R17s) on a 4x2 without any problem. They are about the biggest you can fit without having any rubbing issues.
