Ok, I'm sure many of you have seen this question a million times. I've searched the forum and haven't found the answer I need so...

What is the largest tire I can run on my factory 17" wheels for a '02 FX4 Supercrew? Your help is much appreciated.

 

315/70-17's (35x12.50). These are an extremely tight fit. The only way they will fit is to use the OEM 17x7.5 inch wheels. You will still have to crank up the torsion bars and maybe trim a little plastic off the front bumper's lower valance. I wouldn't go this big unless you plan on lifting the truck in the future.
Of course, you can also fit 33x12.50-17's, 285/70-17's (33x11.50), 295/70-17's (34x12.00) or 305/70-17's (34x12.50).

 

Thank you very much for your help. You really answered the question to the fullest extent. I think I will opt for the 305 / 70 / 17 since I don't want to have to cut or modify anything. I also want to retain my factory rims (I think they are a great design - 5 star) and will not be getting a lift. Thanks wandell!

so the 305's woulld be ok without me having to move torsion bars etc, correct? Can I expect the tires to wear differently since I won't be changing the suspension?

 

You may, or may not have to crank the torsion bars with 305/70-17's. I've seen someone at FTW running them. THe problem is that not all of the sizes I mentioned are available from all the tire manufacturers. The only 305/70-17 I can think of is the Goodyear MTR. I know Nitto just started making a 295/70-17 Terra Grappler. So, you will have to look around to find the tire that best suits your needs.

 

Well I was really wanting BFG All-terrains so it looks like my only option is the 285/70

I just really want a tire that is going to fill out my wheel well and have a good all terrain look, like the BFG A/T

 

Personally, I'd go with the BFG's or the Nitto Terra Grapplers.

 

The 285's will do a nice job of filling out the wheel wells without making look like they are crammed in there.

 

I know a guy down here with an 02 fx4 extended cab that runs 305 maxxis mudders.

I just put 285-70-17 BFG All Terrains on my truck yesterday. They handle the rain 1000000 times better than the stock Goodyears. They dont ride as well but look and handle much better

Very nice truck fordman! I decided this weekend that I'm gonna go with the 285's. Just out of curiosity how much did you pay? Also, would it be possible to get a side shot of your whole truck? No big deal, I'd just like to see the whole layout.

A BFG store quoted me $894 OTD

Sears quoted me $1183 OTD - includes an alignment

Did you need an alignment or make any adjustments to your torsion bar?

285s should fit without any modification.

If you do decide to crank the torsion bars you will need an alignment, otherwise, simply using bigger tires will not require an alignment.

 

best pic I have with tires. I did not crank the bars. You will have about 1/4 in. clearance at the front fascia when you turn, but had no problems. They are a big improvement over stock!

I paid $770 with lifetime warranty(free puncture repair, rotations and tire replacement ), installed at Discount Tire. Check around because I went to alot of Discount Tires before I could find one to deal. I even got some credit on my stock tires.
