Why are MotorCraft Air Filters So Expensive?

Today I quoted two different local Dealers for a replacement Motorcraft Air Filter for my F-150 5.4., they were both at $40.00 for the thing! I can go to most any Auto Parts Store. ie. Pep Boys, Autozone, ect., & can get a Purolator, or Fram for $19. & change.........am I missing something here? I want to Keep the F-150 all Motorcraft, are the Motorcraft ones any better?
What do you guys use?...........

any part you get at a dealer is way overpriced, it's always been that way. they have a LOT of overhead, warranty and repair costs, etc to cover, and overcharging for replacement parts is where they make a lot of money. go to Napa, Autozone, etc and get a filter there, don't worry about keeping it all Motocraft, their filters are no better than anyone elses.

Aftermarket air filters don't seal well in the stock 5.4 3V air box. They can potentially cause lean codes.

A cold air intake could potentially cause lean codes too. The factory tuning isn't very forgiving on these trucks. The best bet would be either to run with the stock airbox and Motorcraft filters, or to go with some type of cold air box and a tuner like an XCalibrator.

K&N and not a problem here at all. No lean conditions, noises, dirt getting by, nothing.

The ones I get from Autozone are only $17. Cheaper if you watch for sales.

They're exactly the same as the OEM filter. They look like they're made in the same factory.

Yup.

Until K&N puts a proper felt gasket on their 04+ 3V filters, I'll pass.

And one wonders why I don't trust their intakes - they can't even manufacture a properly fitting and sealing OEM replacemnt air filter.
Jeez - they must have a tough time sourcing felt or something.
Unbelievable.
Nice oil filters, though, LOL!

Hey all, i'm relatively new here... just wanted to point out that I put a K&N in my '02 4.6L and less than a week later started recieving lean codes. The only thing i'd changed in that time span was the filter so I put the stock back in but still the same reading. So finally I took it in to have it checked out and the mechanics said the oil K&N applies to their filters was mixing in tiny amounts with the air coming in and had fouled the air sensor. I couldnt imagine what else it could be so I took it at face value but now I have some questions... for starters, is that possible? or is it more likely the K&N just wasn't sealing up right? why would a bad seal give a lean code? is it because too much air is allowed around the filter and into the intake?

Thanks for your help guys

Buy WIX filters and you can't go wrong. Actually, Wix makes a lot of filters for other brands, including some MOTORCRAFT. Purolator makes SOME Motorcraft. I no longer will buy Fram, think their quality as taken a nose dive.
Wix or Motorcraft filters will flow more air than your stock or moderately modified engine can require ..... and they don't contaminate your air sensor with oil.
