Engineering flaw with 00 F150

Who exactly decided to put the spark plugs on the 5.4L underneath all that stuff?

My service engine light came on the other day and after getting the codes read came to find out that cylinder #7 was misfiring. How much of that "extra" stuff do I have to move just to get to #7?

I've already got the new plugs and just need to figure out how long this is gonna take me, so I can get the appropriate amount of beer.

Thanks
Derek

well most of that stuff you are talking about is your coil pack. they have a seperate coil on each plug, and its just a seperate boot that you pull off instead of a traditional plug wire... Be very carefull if you are removing a plug, b.c the 5.4s are notorious for having some of the plug stay in the head, or the head stripping out...

What part of texas are you from?

Thanks for the tip about the coil packs.

I'm stationed at Fort Hood with the 4th Infantry Division.

Do a search on 'COP' [coil over plug] for details and pics. Lots of good info here.

An umtrue statement - The 5.4 & 4.6 Liter share the same head. If theres a problem it's not 5.4L specific - It goes for both engines...

Patrick, your bashing the 5.4L in the wrong thread...

Well for sure the 3vs have different heads on the 04+ but if you do some research, 99-mid 02 the 5.4s DID have a problem with spark plugs, where as in that whole 97-03 there wasnt near the problems on the 4.6s

I never thaught the spark plugs were that bad to get, except #7/8, unless you have all kinds of extensions, short and long as well as u-joints for every one. Other than that, easy. I didn't find that my plugs were all that bad either, came out pretty easy and were ok for wear. I did put a dab of antisieze on the new threads and didn't overtighten. I would think the 04 and newer 3v 5.4's would be easier still, I may be wrong. In all fairness, it's not the engine so much as where it was assembled in terms of problems. The 4.6 and 5.4 shared almost all the same stuff except the obvious crap, but let the superiority battle rage on!!!

Belkhorn2 - Welcome to the forums. Before you get too far along, the best investment you can make is a shop manual - less than $ 20 at most auto parts stores.

Thanks for all the help guys. It is #7 that's having the trouble and I picked up one of the shop manuals. Now all I gotta do is wait for the rain to stop so I change the dang things.
