Overdrive In Winter

Hi guys, I would like to know if it's normal in cold weather that my transmission not shifting on overdrive before 3-5 miles. One guy said to me it's a protection for the transmission. They let the transmission going hotter before shifting on the final gear. I own a f150 2000 4x4 with the 4.6l auto. Thanks yamyam

It is shifting into OD, but the torque converter will not lock up until the fluid warms up a bit. You can easily tell that by the RPM, assuming you have a tach. Unlocked if you give a little gas, the rpms will go up immediately. Locked, the rpms only go up with your speed.

It's normal.
The transmission temp sensor won't let the PCM use OD until close to 100° +/-.
This sensor determines the shift skeds, conv lock up and system pressures.
ref 29-4.
