89 F150 5.0 Check engine light

History on this truck. Started working on a rough to no idle problem. Checked codes and found the TPS to be out of adjustment. Set the TPS to .97. Pulled and cleaned the TB and automatic idle control valve. Truck idles high but now idles.

Recently the check engine light come on. The truck will idle if in park or neutral. Put the truck in gear, any gear, and it runs very rough and wants to quit. Stumbles when leaving from a stop position. Feels like it does not want to take the gas. Also, the truck does not want to shift into overdrive unless you lift off of the gass pedal and does not want to down shift when coming to a stop.

Last code check I found was a code 22.

Any ideas?

It was suggested by another forum member that you might get better results in this section. I agreed, so your thread got moved here. Hope someone has some thoughts for you.

sounds like a tranny problem to me. not an engine problem. but code 22 is either bp sensor out of self test range or bp sensor or map sensor out of range

Make sure you're reading the codes correctly. It's very easy to confuse 11 (pass) with 22 since each code gets flashed out twice. For the full procedure (in agonizing detail), read this whole caption, and follow the links in it:

Both of your symptoms sound like a bad IAC. If you cleaned it wrong, you could have made it worse. Read this & its caption:

The initial problem sounds like ignition: check all plug gaps, plug condition/color, plug wire routing, ignition timing, timing chain slack, & plug wire resistances.

. .

If they're all OK, then it could be a bad ICM. Your distributor-mounted version was the subject of a class-action lawsuit, so it's a likely suspect. So is the wiring harness. The older editions of the Haynes manual contain an excellent ignition diagnostic procedure that WILL find any problems, if they exist.

. .

But without knowing more about your truck, it's hard to be more specific. Fill in your profile so the truck's details show with every post. You can omit "F150" and "19.." since we assume that. But put the engine size, transmission model, trim level, cab/bed configuration & wheelbase, transfer case model (if 4WD), gear ratio, tire size, miles (or KMs), mods, maintenance, damage, repairs, etc. If you run out of room, put it in a signature. If you don't know all the truck's details, read this caption & follow the links in it:

If there are any terms you don't understand, read this: Automotive Terms & Abbreviations

Thanks for moving this to the correct location. Here is what I know about the truck. 89 model with 138k miles showing. Engine swaped some time in the past. Believe it to be a 86 model 5.0 engine. Not sure of the model, it is a 5.0. Knock sensor installed. Wheels are orginal with the red stripped beauty ring, replacement tires matching what was on the truck from the factory. Short wheel base standard cab fleet side with dual tanks. No real mods other than the motor swap. I will pull the transmission code off of the door sticker tomorrow.
