80 f-250 only starts when you let the key off???

Hey
I have a 1980 F-250 with a 460 in it. It will only start when i let the key off and i have no idea why it does this?? ignition module??? help

Read this thread until you find the one about the ignition switch. Does it have a tilt/cruise column? If so, follow that link, then go back to the main forum list & go into the Tech Writeups forum. There's one called "Ignition Actuator Replacement" that has plenty of pics to show you exactly what to do.

If Steve's suggestion doesn't solve your problem, you may need a new ignition module. Your ignition module has two harness plugs, one of which has two wires; a red one and a white one. Unplug that one, and check the white wire for voltage while someone else cranks the engine with the key (it won't start). If no voltage is present, follow Steve's suggestion. If voltage is present, the ignition switch is fine, and the module needs to be replaced.
