94 starting problem

I looked a bit through the threads but couldn't find the problem that I'm having..

Turn the key, and the truck will crank real hard, after the cranking it will take a second, and then fire kind of oddly, and then sputter into existence..

Sometimes when I'm going home for work, it will crank real hard, but won't start. If I put in some gas, it will start, but otherwise it'll just try starting really hard but won't get anywhere.

any suggestions on things to check?

Yes, you need to check the fuel pressure, and also see how fast it bleeds down when you turn the key off.

check your base timing. 10 degrees before tdc. With the spout connector disconnected. This is the little plug just in front of the connector on the ignition module on the distributor.
