New muffler

Since I am here I will ask away.

I am thinking of finally replacing the giant stock muffler on my 02.
I have a stock K&N replacement and would like something that compliments that but won't be loud. I want quiet but throaty if that makes sense. For instance I don't want the Flowmaster 40 sound.

Is there such a thing as an exhaust that helps with low end torque?

Cut the muffler out and install a piece of straight pipe.....price is right and you get the sound. Mufflers don't make hp/trq.....look into long tubes and a good custom tune for that.

and aftermarket mufflers are proven to make HP/Torque gains with the right diameter piping...

I have an 18" Magnaflow and love it. Slightly louder than stock at idle and hwy speed but growls nice when you step on it!

Where? Show me a dyno that proves your point please.

With 4 cats you'd be surprised as to how quiet straight pipes sound.

Just a muffler alone won't improve performance much. You have to go all the way up to the manifolds to start generating some noticeable power (i.e. headers, hi-flow cats, etc...).

Back on topic, an 18 inch Magnaflow sounds like it's right up your alley.

I would say the Magnaflow 14" if you want a throatier sound under throttle.

I was thinking the same thing, but I thought he wanted it quiet, but some rumble. I was afraid to mention the 14" because he said quiet. That was my only confusion with that.

I think the 18" may be what you want. I went with the 22" because I wanted quiet, and that's what I definitely got. No louder at idle, and quiet at cruise, but just a deeper tone on accelleration. Hard to tell from inside the truck that anything was done at all. Outside, my friend noticed the difference, but again, just a little bit "meatier sounding." If you didn't know it was a different muffler, you might not notice.

Often I wish I'd gone with the 18" because I'd like a little more "growl," but when I'm towing the trailer to go camping with the wife, I remember why I like the 22, as well. I think she's happier without the added noise (and, therefore, I am happier, too!).
