Raptor's efans!
yeah. i just got back from my 3rd trip in town just to get a gallon of milk. im trying to empty this tank! but anyways, heres a mini-update
it is hot as ***** outside and going through traffic it swayed up to 215* so i kicked on the heat a bit to bring it down. i do need that second fan, so ill be tapping into my savings.
but anyways, it really cleans up the engine compartment. and when i shut it off the fans stays on for 2-3 mins and when it finally clicks off it sounds like a jet shutting down. its really cool. the engine warms up quicker, thats a plus. and after having the A/C on all day driving into town i can actually tell it is colder. i had to pass a V8 chevy going slow (he was towing a trailer) and i can actually feel the power. low end got a little boost but past 3,000 the engine just sped my past that guy. woot! and heres the real kicker: many of you may notice that when you top off the tank, the truck will go a little while before the needle moves. well mine used to do 45-55 miles before it began to go down. today my trip meter was at 66 miles before it began to move. and usually i will have 100-120 miles on the trip meter by the time the needle hits the 3/4 mark, well im at 88 miles and its not even fully off the "F" yet! amazing! during the ride home i took the highway and i can do 70 mph at the fuel consumption of 60 mph before the efans. my instantaneous MPG (per the SG2) is showing 19-22 mpg. i know its not accurate, but before the fans it was showing lower.
ill let you know more as im driving. and derek, i spent a total of $80 doing this. i still need to get another fan, so in the end, this simple mod will cost me no more than $130. im still watching my water temp like a hawk, but for the price of this mod, you get a +1 in every deparment! fuel economy, power, and A/C!!!!
im actually very pleased with the controller. the thing is quite heavy for its size and has .16" gauge wiring with an in-line fuse. if anything, i think the fan will die before the controller. that plus ive heard a lot of good things about hayden-imperial controllers

well hes getting another one so that will go on the hotter side. good to here your gas is going up. in the winter the truck heats up so much faster its nice.
i dont trust temp controllers. alot of people on here have had them fail and bam the truck is overheated. thats why i have mine direct switch but never the less it looks good and glad it works. i agree with you. i told my self if i was ever to start over modding stuff id start with an E-fan frist.
215* isnt bad at all i wouldnt worry bout turning the heat on. plus you have fail safe cooling witch i belive starts at 260* but id worry if it was 230-260*

i popped on the heat because i didnt want to have my fan running so much and so hard. everytime i shut down ill pop the hood and feel the fan' motor and bearings housing and it is hot enough to scorch!
pat, you said earier about that ignition trigger. well my '98 has it set up differently. the only solenoid i have is getting constant feed from the battery (thus the fans remaining on for as long as 5 mins). what is another ideal ignition that is in the engine compartment? my dad still dosen't know about them and i dont plan on him to unless he hears them humming when i get home.

If stealth from dad is important, the shroud would cover lots of your sins (and help greatly with cooling, too).
BTW, if you have to worry about the fan being on for extensive periods, you bought the wrong fan. Mine has been on every minute my AC has been on for the last 9 years. I live in a very hot climate and have 127,000 miles on my truck. The fan should be able to take running for extensive periods.
FWIW, the truck will absolutely put out heat from the heater quicker in winter. And run quieter when the fan is not on. All just icing on the cake.
Also, if your fans are 100% thermostatically controlled and can come on when the key is out of the ignition, that is not necessary, IMO. It is very possible under hood and radiator water temps will rise after you shut the truck off. No air and water circulation will do that. Every vehicle I have ever seen wired this way would have the fans click on 5 - 10 minutes after the motor is shut off. On a hot day, they could run for a while, without the benefit of air being pushed in from the vehicle making forward progress.
No need to cool the radiator when the motor is not on. You are just stressing the battery and possibly creating a fire hazard in the event of a wiring or equpment failure.

splice the E-fans to get power from the fuse with the ingntion. this way when you turn the key off *turns ingniton off too* you will turn the fan off. but with key forward even engine off the fan can run. also will run when the ignition is on. my buddy did this to his bronco he had the same prob of it running 10-15 mins after he turned it off.
humm if the fan is getting hot somthing might not be right. the bearings might be toast. you should be able to have the fans on full blast the whole time your driving with no probs.

nah, i think the fan is okay. its nice and quiet, but i guess the heat is normal. i;d rather not run so much wire chasing a fuse. i was thinking the red wire on the MAF but patman said this is a bad idea...

i had mine wired to the battery with a fuse and they would cycle after i shut the truck off. Nothing wrong with that if you have a solid battery.... actually some benift of not letting the enigne heat soak as much on shut down. think of turbo tumers on turbo cars. you could go one step further and get an electric water pump that would run after engine is shut down as well. plus you would free up some more ponies, :o
i think theres a coil fuse under the hood. i know theres on under the dash not to hard to tap into a fuse. and your fans wont stay on.
never grabed my E-fan bearings after using them my dual 16" fans or my big 24" ill give it a shot and see if its hot. im sure it prob would be.
oh and i forgot the shroud thing... all the E-fan does or any fan really just pulls cold air threw the radiator to cool off the coolant running threw it. the fan does not cool the motor it self. sure it blows some cold air at the motor but thats not what cools the motor. its the cold air cooling the coolant in the radator. all that shroud really does is stop people from choping there hand off on the fan.
fan shroud is in the same catagory as a throttle body spacer pointless!
yes i ever tested this i put my stock one over my 24" fan truck ran hotter with the shroud on because it was blocking more air.
E-waterpump on a DD is not very good they fail and are not really ment for a DD more of a Drag car/truck. because if that fails you are super screwed. yes its nice to keep coolant flowing after shut down and the fan blowing but ive heard alot of probs with E-waterpumps.

never seen an 04-08 fan set up i assume it would be about the same. take the clutch fan off zippy tie the E-fan on the radiator run a temp control switch or a direct 12V switch *like mine* and bam E-fans. junkyard fans run you about 30-50 bucks depends on the junkyard. new 16" fans like raptors are 70 each i belive autozone sells them and the temp controllers. i vote get a set from junk yard and get the control from autozone. prob would be under 100 bucks! mine was under 50 because i did a direct 12V switch
i did a setup on Scott's 05 4.6. you can no longer do efans after 07 since they went to a pulse width modulated electromagnetic fan clutch, instead of the traditional thermostatic fan clutch
