Here are the beginning pics of my new engine buildup. It's going to take a while and I'm in no rush, but here are the beginnnings. Looks ugly but hopefully a decent donor block, maybe even a salvageable crank, not sure yet. Came out of a 2007 burnt truck.

I'll be trying to match the quality/durability of the other "built" motors being offered by so many companies now. I just want to do it much cheaper so I can afford the best of the best without paying the premium price. I will buy parts as I find the best deals or come across quality used ones.

Bottom end will be pretty standard, still determining what all I want. Hopefully top it off with some Trick Flows and a nice set of Comp or Bullet Cams and my Vortech. Will be increasing the boost big time once I get the beefed up internals.

Block will start off with boring and making sure the crank alignment is fine.

 

Dude you just bought a junk block that is for sure going to be totally unuseable. Every bit of aluminum is trash because the heat has warped and ruined it and the steel is now brittle because of heat as well and will fracture if under any load. Sorry man but all you have is a bunch of scrap metal.

 

How much did you pay for it all? You better strip it down and make sure the block is still usable.

 

I dont plan on using the aluminum, all I want is the block. It will take a lot more heat than a fire to make an engine block brittle. Aluminum melts at 1,220 deg, it takes 2,250 deg to melt cast iron. You forget there's an explosion in each cylinder every time it fires.

 

$125, Its coming apart first thing to make sure it's all in good shape. If its no good, I'm really not out much, I have several other options if this one is not good. Should be fine, it takes a lot of heat to damage the block itself. If you notice, the oil filter didn't even get hot enough to damage it. I have a friend with a machine shop, it will be checked over very closely before it gets the ok.

My thoughts exactly... I was sceptical at first but the more I researched, it will be fine. May even salvage a good crank, not sure.

may even be a forged crank, you've got a good plan, look at paschal performance for thier stroker kit and thier stage 4 heads... I want the 6.2 crank and the tf heads for mine

It was local, so no freight charges and its from a 2007, so its the stronger block. If I'm lucky, the crank may be forged and good. I'm a little worried because of the opening at the front of the timing cover, not sure how much moisture could have gotten down in the hole and rusted the snout of the crank.

I saw their crank, would be fun to try but I don't think I want to get that extreme with this, not to mention it WAY too much money!

 

no that crank wont be forged. the block isnt any stronger than the older iron blocks.

 

I hope I haven't followed the wrong information. Is this correct?
From everything I've read, the 2004-up include the NVH blocks. I think Neal or someone had another post about that. I pulled this out of a Ford article in one of the car and drivers or something.

"The engine block is stiffer than in past V8 designs by adding computer-designed reinforcements cast into the block sidewalls and thicker metal along the gasket surfaces. This, in conjunction with a new oil pan made of metal sandwiched around a plastic core, helps quiet sound coming from the bottom of the engine."

 

I wouldn't be worried about an NVH block unless you plan on making 1000 to 15000HP.

The 2007 5.4 block is a NVH block. It is much stronger that the older 97-02 blocks. FYI.
