I had a 13 3.5 ecoboost , mileage never or even close to sticker or what others say they were getting. Dealer looked at it several times , all the latest and greatest ecm updates still the best was 14 - 14.5 mpg empty at 70 mph. Towing or toyhauler 5200 lbs empty was 3-4 mpg. It may have been a typical ecoboost or a problematic POS I don't really know or care . Its now gone ,ordered a new 5.0 then after more research and talking with other 5.0 owners went with a diesel. Very happy (thrilled) with mileage and sure as hell has all the power i'll ever need. As far as a 2.7 the only use I can see for that is in a 2 wheel drive soccer mom truck. Just my 2 cents

Get the 5.0 and never look back! I have the 2.0 EB in my explorer, when warranty is up, so is the explorer, I don't trust turbo's! I had the 5.4 in my old F150, had the 5.0 in my mustang and now this truck, beautiful engines.

Any scientific evidence or basis for this or just fear of the unknown?

I don't trust them, warranty is up so is the explorer, its more fear of forking out $$$ to fix these things "if" or "when" anything happens.

There's just so much to break, and when it does, look the hell out

For scientific evidence, look at the costs that some of the 6.7 diesel owners are looking at every time something breaks out of warranty on a super duty... there are quite a few parallels

I would like to see how many people have early EB's with over 100k miles... and what kind of things are breaking on them

I have no current complaints with my EB, it moves my explorer along great with pretty good gas mileage for a big suv, just scared of what's in store after 60k....

Read up on how they operate and most of your fears will go away. Modern turbos are very reliable and should last the life of the vehicle. A lot of the people screaming on the internet about how bad they are don't have the slightest clue on how they work, but they fear the unknown. It's like the old guys screaming about when fuel injection replaced the carburetor. They didn't understand it so it was a bad thing.

Just stay away from a K&N air filter, and the EB turbos will be fine!

There's not much more there to break. The diesels have emissions problems and use a much more complex turbo set up. You're comparing apples to jalapeno peppers.

I have one of the first EBs off the line and in the 90k I've put on it all I have had to do is change the oil and sparkplugs. A friend of mine traded in his 2012 with 230,000 and was still factory everything.

Years ago, it was recommended to do a "cool down" before shutting the engine off. This was due to the turbo spinning at a high speed, and the bearings loosing oil pressure when the engine stopped. I don't know if this is still the case with the EB.
