2003 ford V10

I have a motor home with the V10 . It has 80k miles/120k Kms and want to take it to Mexico. Not sure if the spk plugs have been changed but will do. With all the info about blown out plugs are there any suggestions re any changes to the stock plugs. Also, would it be wise to carry an insert kit and also an insert that plugs the hole incase you are in no man's land?

I'm not too up-to-date on the V10s, but I know the V8s were the problems with the blown plugs as well. If you plan to drive more than a thousand miles, I would change the plugs and bring a kit just incase.

In theory if you use online recommended torque specs you lower your risk of blowouts. 28 ft lbs IIRC

Ford originally spec'd it for 14 ft lbs

Also I know late 03 in the 4.6 and 5.5.4 Ford finally had updated heads with 8 threads. I'm not sure if and when the V10 got the updated heads with more threads

You might be better off asking this in the Super Duty forum. I think I'm the only one with a V10 here

That being said, every story I have heard about the blown plugs starts off with a warning tick. I don't know how easy it is to access your engine, but if it were me, I'd at least bring a 7mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, universal, and extensions, plus a spark plug socket and associated extensions & universals. I always travel with a fairly full compliment of tools in my truck - but I'm not easy on it and it's got 212k.

Yes, we have all heard the stories, but in the grand scheme of things, the percentages are pretty low. Be prepared, but don't stress it - especially on a 2003. I'd be more worried about the Mexico part than the V10.

Me too!

I have both the hole plug and the insert kit that I got when a friend from church asked me to fix his 5.4. Never could get the plug to seat in the #4 hole, so I drove it to my place loud and proud for repairs. Disconnected injector and removed COP first. Loud as hell and drove like a pooch, but it drove.

If you're really, really worried about potential blowouts, just insert all 10 holes before you leave.

Sorry, let me be more specific. I think I'm the only one around here with a V10 in an F150 chassis.
