The New Aluminum Ford F-150 Weighs in Like a Lightweight Champion

The new Ford F150 should be called the F-150 lightweight, or the F150 Lotus edition because it weighs like nothing. Earlier, Ford held a press conference to detail more information about the new F-150, including horsepower, torque, the much anticipated tow ratings, and critically the weight savings that the new aluminum body has provided.

What is particularly interesting is the smaller 2.7L EcoBoost V6 rated at more horsepower and torque than the standard V6.

Last week we saw Ford release the specs of the newest Mustang and saw the exact same kind of numbers produced from the EcoBoost 4-cylinder and the V6.

I’m not sure why Ford keeps pushing the less powerful and less frugal V6 when they have a better version? Even the payloads are much worse in the standard V6. If Ford has better engines that give better MPGs, power, torque, and towing ability, why not discontinue the older less efficient models?

But the real message here was the weight of the new truck. The lightest optioned F-150 will just be a tick under 5,000 pounds! That is truly an amazing accomplishment from Ford. The previous F-150 weighed in at 5,671 vs the new gen F-150 weighing in at 4,942, that’s 700 pounds of weight loss on the truck!

This means towing ability, payload capacity and fuel economy all get a pretty big rise. Everyone is still quite worried about how to repair the trucks because of the new skin, but with these numbers, this truck is going to be a powerhouse.

It also looks like my Ranger fantasy has officially gone out the window. With a truck this light and has all of these staggering numbers, there is no more room for a Ranger to be brought back from the dead.

2.7L EcoBoost V6
• 2,250 lbs max payload
• 8,500 lbs towing capacity
• 325 hp, and 375 lb-ft

3.5L V6
• Up to 1,910 lb max payload
• 7,600 lbs towing capacity
• 283 hp, and 255 lb-ft
